Obituary of Theodore Stanley Wind
LITTLE FALLS: Theodore S. "Mayor" Wind, 85, a lifelong Little Falls resident, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at SUNY Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse with the love and support of his family by his side.
Ted was born in Little Falls on May 12, 1930, the son of the late Joseph and Edna (Siek) Wind. Raised and educated locally, he was a graduate of Little Falls High School and was very proud to have played on their 1949 undefeated football team. He proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict as a Corporal. On June 2, 1956 he married the former Catherine Kelleher with whom he shared 44 years in a devoted and loving union until her passing on March 25, 2000.
Ted retired from the New York Telephone Company after working there for many years. He served the City of Little Falls for over 30 years as mayor, a position which he took very seriously and with great pride. During his years in office as mayor, the accomplishments he was most proud of include helping to keep Little Falls Hospital open and becoming affiliated with the Bassett Healthcare Network; spearheading the development of the Veterans Memorial Complex, a facility that he was most proud of. This beautiful facility caught the attention of the NY Mets Single A baseball team which was enjoyed by thousands of people over the years and still remembered by many. He also served as a Herkimer County Legislator for 10 years.
Sports were a passion of Ted's and this passion has been carried over to his children and grandchildren. While his children were growing up, he was very involved in coaching Little League, Pop Warner and American Legion baseball. He enjoyed working with his grandchildren and would frequent many of their games and sometimes would sneak a peek at a practice. Ted was a loving and devoted patriarch, who was so very proud and supportive of his children and their accomplishments. During his leisure time, he was an avid golfer, enjoyed working out at the YMCA, and watching Notre Dame Football, Duke Basketball, the NY Giants and Boston Red Sox.
Ted was a life member of the Polish Club and Little Falls Elks Lodge. He was also a faithful parishioner of Holy Family Parish, Little Falls. Ted also held memberships with the DeCarlo Staffo Post, CWA (Communication Workers of America), the Little Falls American Legion Post, Mayors Conferences of NYS, Knights of Columbus, Varsity Club, and YMCA.
He is survived by his children, Thomas and Lisa Wind of Little Falls, Robert and Dawn Wind of Latham, Dr. Michael and Robyn Wind of Michigan, John and Joella Wind of Manlius, and Mary Wind and her friend Mike Kline of Little Falls; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Wind of Little Falls; his cherished grandchildren, Dimitri, Theo, Laura, Erin, Sydney, Reagan, Jack, Bailey and Nikki Wind; as well as his nephews and many special friends.
