Obituary of Eugene H. Wagner, Sr.
STONE ARABIA – Mr. Eugene Heinz Wagner Sr., 80, passed
away on the evening of November 24, 2015 at Brigham and
Women’s Hospital in Boston.
He was born on October 30, 1935, in Grossachsenheim, a small
village in the district of Ludwigsburg, Germany, to the late
Fridrich and Berta (Bachman) Wagner. He was the fourth of six
sons. At the age of 18 he left his homeland for America to work as
a hired hand on a relative’s farm in, of all places, Indian Castle. It
was here that he met his future wife, Arleen Stock. They were
united in marriage at St. John’s Reformed Church on November 3,
1956 – a devoted and loving bond that produced five children and
thrived until Arleen’s passing some 56 years later.
Eugene was a great neighbor and untiring friend who could always
be counted on to pitch in and lend a hand no matter what the task.
Professionally, he was employed as a textile mechanic by Gehring
Textiles at Helmont Mills in St. Johnsville until his retirement in
2005. He was an active member of St. John’s Reformed Church
where he served on the Consistory, most recently as Vice
President.
He has also been, for the better part of 40 years, a driving force
behind Fort Klock (the historic restoration along the north bank of
the Mohawk between St. Johnsville and Fort Plain), beginning as
the resident blacksmith (a trade he apprenticed in as a young man
in Germany) and culminating in the organization’s presidency, an
office he has filled, on and off, for decades. Of the many roles he
played at Fort Klock, his favorite and the one remembered by so
many of us as children was his annual portrayal of Saint Nick.
Eugene was a much respected, dearly loved father and grandfather.
He is survived by his children: Eugene Jr. and Doris of NY, NY,
Dale and Linda of Little Falls, Brian and Rhonda of South Dakota,
Judy of St. Johnsville and Heidi of Key West, Florida; nine
grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; his brother Fritz and his
wife Anna; his sister-in-law Phyllis and her husband Sidney of
Johnstown; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and very dear
friends. He was predeceased by his brothers Hugo, Albert, Gerhard
and Hans.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 4-7pm on
Sunday November 29, 2015 at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9
Center St., St. Johnsville. A religious service will be held at 11am
on Monday November 30, 2015 at St. John’s Reformed Church in
St. Johnsville, with Rev. Nancy Ryan, officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Eugene’s name
be made to either St. John’s Reformed Church or the Fort Klock
Historical Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home
and at the church.
