Obituary of Marsha Mays-Smith, Ed.D.

EAST HERKIMER: Marsha Mays-Smith, Ed.D., of East Herkimer, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at Little Falls Hospital. She was born on June 10, 1963 in Estill County, KY, the daughter of Virginia L. (Bandenburg) Call and the late Kenneth Mays. She was a graduate of Little Falls High School and continued her education attending Seaton Hall University receiving her Doctorate in Education. On December 22, 1984, Marsha was united in marriage to James M. Smith at St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer. The couple shared a union of almost 31 years. She was last employed as a principal for Fisher Elementary School in Mohawk. She also held the position of assistant superintendent for the Ilion School District. Marsha was an avid outdoors person and enjoyed visiting national parks. She was a very dedicated educator and loved her family and friends dearly. She is survived by her beloved husband, James M. Smith of East Herkimer; her mother, Virginia Call of Stratford; her sons, Holden M. J. Smith of East Herkimer and William J. Smith; a daughter, Tiffany R. Smith of East Herkimer; a brother, John Withrow and companion JoAnn Adamovich of Frankfort; sisters, Sandy Mays-Brault and husband John of Mohawk and Karen Combs and husband Edward of Kentucky. She also leaves her father in-law and mother-in-law, James G. and Connie Smith of East Herkimer; sister-in-law, Mariann Smith of California; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. She also left behind two loving and devoted canine companions: Umaga and Wooly. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Enea Family Funeral Home (F.K.A. Holleran Funeral Service), 220 N. Washington Street, Herkimer, NY (315)866-1011. Her funeral will take place on Thursday, December 17, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with The Reverend Brian Engel, Pastor of the Mohawk Reformed Church, officiating. Those wishing to make a donation in Marsha’s memory may consider the Marsha Mays-Smith Education Trust Fund that will be established for her children. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
