Obituary of Anna May Fernandez

ILION - Anna May Fernandez, age 82, formerly of West St., Ilion, NY, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 4, 2016, at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, NY. She was born on April 26, 1933, in Bridgewater, NY, daughter of the late Frank H. and Estel (Davis) Belfield. On March 3, 1952, Anna married the late Emilio J. “Jim” Fernandez at St. Joseph’s Church in Albany, NY. Anna worked as a hairdresser for many years from her in-home salon. She was also a loved sales clerk at “Herb” Philipson’s store in Herkimer. A member of the Church of the Annunciation in Ilion, Anna was a devoted homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was an avid NY Yankee fan, never missing a televised ballgame, and enjoyed tending to her flower garden. Her life centered around her beloved family. She attended every sporting event, concert or play she could involving her grandchildren. Anna is survived by children, Thomas (Lisa), Steven and Cynthia Fernandez; grandchildren, Anthony Fernandez, Emily Benner and Krystina Fernandez; brother, Don (Marilyn) Belfield; in-laws, Helen Belfield, John (Beatrice) Fernandez, Paul (Shirley) Fernandez and Gerald (Leslie) Fernandez; numerous nieces, nephews and friends; and her trusted canine companions, Buster and Toby. She was predeceased by her husband; parents; brothers, Ebenezer (Theresa) Belfield, Ora (Ruth) Belfield, Harold Belfield and William Belfield; sister, Winifred (Ferd) Ames; in-laws, Gloria Bouscher and Patricia Lesch; as well as several beloved dogs. A Memorial Mass for Anna will be celebrated on Saturday, April 23rd, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Annunciation, West St., Ilion, NY. The burial is to follow at Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion, NY. A gathering immediately following the burial will be announced at the Memorial Mass. There are no scheduled calling hours. Perennial flowers will be accepted for planting in the spring at her grave-marker (please bring to the gathering) or, in support of her canine companions, memorial contributions may be made to the Helping Hounds Dog Rescue, 6606 Kinne Road, Syracuse, NY 13214. The Fernandez family has entrusted Anna May’s service arrangements and supervision to their Family Funeral Director, Don Applegate, at Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home’s newly reopened and renovated home at 102 West St., Ilion, NY (895-7722).
