Obituary of Theron J. "Sarge" Moore

Mr. Theron J. “Sarge” Moore, age 70, of Ilion, passed away in the privacy and comfort of his home on Saturday, January 16, 2016, after a courageous battle with cancer. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded with the love and support of his family and friends at his bedside. Born on March 25, 1945, Theron was the son of the late Theron W. and Helen (Shaut) Moore. He was raised and educated in Herkimer, graduating from Herkimer High School with the Class of 1963. He continued his education at Utica College of Syracuse University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sales and Marketing. As a provider for his family and a man of strong work ethic, Sarge was employed with the Partlow Corporation in New Hartford for many years. He then transitioned to the Riverhawk Co. for a number of years before finally taking a position as a Sales Manager with JUMO Process Control, a company with whom he was employed with for eight years, until his retirement in 2014. On May 1, 1982, Theron was wed to the former Joanne Lasher in Frankfort. Their marriage, which spanned over 33 years, was one that was filled with fun, love and laughter. As a couple, they were one another’s best friend and held a mutual respect and admiration. They particularly enjoyed travelling together and one of their favorite places to visit was New York City, where they could attend baseball games played by their beloved Yankees. Theron’s duty as a husband was trumped only by his role as a father. The sun rose and set over his beloved daughter, Ashley, and the two were truly inseparable. She stole his heart from the day she was born and he wasn’t shy to let people know it. Saturday lunch dates were carried on from the time Ashley was a baby, a tradition that helped to reinforce their bond. He was the best father that any girl could ask for. In his spare time, Sarge enjoyed sports, and when he wasn’t rooting on his New York Yankees, he could be found in front of the NASCAR races. He was a longtime fan of the now retired, #9, Bill Elliot, and currently cheered for #22, Joey Logano. In his younger years, he enjoyed go-kart racing and to this day, was a member of the International Karting Association. He also held a position with the Ilion Zoning Board for over ten years, and was involved with the Ilion Music Boosters. He and his family attended Sunday services at the St. Augustine Episcopal Church in Ilion. Theron’s legacy will be carried on by those he leaves behind, including his wife, Joanne; his daughter, Ashley Moore and her boyfriend, Robert Reed; his sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Ray Camadine, of Lee Center; his in-laws, Jeanne Buehler, of Oriskany, John and Larraine Lasher, of Mohawk, Robert Lasher, of Herkimer and Joel Lasher, of Ilion. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including a special niece and “BFF”, Mackenzie Lasher; his aunts, Blanche Matthews, of Herkimer, and Donna McKee, of Whitehouse, TN; many cousins; and friends, including a special friend, Sal Acquaviva, and longtime friend, Jake Johnson. He was predeceased by his parents-in-law, John and Jean Lasher. Visitation will be held from 12 noon – 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 23, 2016, from the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home’s newly reopened and renovated location at 102 West Street, Ilion, NY 13357. Those wishing to do so may consider memorial contributions in Theron’s name to Ilion Ambulance, Central Fire Station, Ilion, NY 13357 or to Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 4277 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, NY 13413. Sarge’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday at 2:00 PM from the chapel of the funeral home, immediately upon the conclusion of visitation, with Deacon James Bower, officiating. Burial will take place in the spring, in Oak Hill Cemetery. A special thank you is extended to Sarge’s friends, John Kelly, Gary Buehler and the Hartmann family, for their constant support and concern throughout his illness.
