Obituary of Joseph F. Urtz

ILION - Joseph “Joe” F. Urtz, age 97, formerly of Ilion, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 20, 2016, at the Presbyterian Homes of C.N.Y., New Hartford. He was born on April 21, 1918, in Ilion, the son of Joseph and Julia (Sims) Urtz, and graduated from Ilion High School. Joe was a veteran of WW II, serving in the US Army. On January 15, 1946, Mr. Urtz was married to Myrtle J. Farmer at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Hartford, CT. She died on August 6, 2011. Joe was employed as a machinist at the Library Bureau, Herkimer, for 37 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Church of the Annunciation, Ilion, and a life member of the Ilion Knights of Columbus. Joe was kind, caring and always willing to lend a hand. Surviving family members include his daughters and sons-in-law, Joanne and Robert Privitera, of Mt. Morris, NY, and Patricia and Frank Maggiolino, of Whitesboro; his son and daughter-in-law, Brett and Debra Urtz, of Mohawk; seven grandchildren, Kelly and Dana Lonis, of Syracuse, David Lonis, of Washington, D.C., Peter Privitera and his wife, Sara, of Mt. Morris, Julie Privitera, of Orlando, FL, Robert Privitera, of Orlando, FL, Heather Urtz, of Frankfort, and Justin Urtz and his wife, Monica, of Ilion; nine great-grandchildren, Maddox Lonis, Avery Jayne Privitera, Reece Alexander Urtz, Penelope Mae Urtz, Freya Harper Urtz, Michael and Miriam Lonis, Evan Joseph Privitera, and Colts Jacobs Oxley; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Myrtle; his sisters, Rita Wheelock and Lucy Joy; and his brothers, Clarence, Robert, Paul, Jerome and Thomas Urtz. Funeral services will be held 9:00 a.m., Thursday, February 25, 2016, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home’s newly reopened and renovated home at 102 West St., Ilion, and 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Annunciation, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Leo Potvin, assisted by Deacon Dennis Jones. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Frankfort. Calling hours are Wednesday, February 24, 2016, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home at 102 West St., Ilion. The Ilion Knights of Columbus service will be held at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home. The Urtz family extends their gratitude to the staff of the Maple Unit at the Presbyterian Home for their care and compassion shown to Joe.
