Obituary of Elizabeth Widay

HERKIMER – Mrs. Elizabeth “Betty” Widay, a longtime resident of Herkimer, NY, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2016 at Valley Health Services. She was born on September 2, 1928 in Herkimer, a daughter to the late Dean and Genevieve (Clifford) Spellman. Betty was the Valedictorian of her class at West Canada Valley High School. She went on to graduate Magna Cum Laude from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. Her marriage to Michael D. Widay took place July 28, 1956 at St. John’s Church in Newport. Mr. Widay passed away November 6, 1990. Betty was a teacher, having taught in Schroon Lake, NY at one time and in Scotia, NY for a year. For sixteen years she was a music teacher at St. Francis de Sales School in Herkimer. She was a longtime member of St. Francis de Sales Church, and participated as the church choir director as well as church organist for many years. She enjoyed taking trips to the Syracuse Symphony. She also found great pleasure spending the summer and fall months at her camp in Raquette Lake surrounded by her family. She is survived by her daughter, Therese Schmid and her husband Dan of Fairport, NY, her sons, John Widay and wife Ann of San Diego, CA, Dean Widay and his wife Christine of Charlton, NY, William Widay and his wife Karen of Holland Patent, NY, David Widay of Rockport, MA, and Peter Widay and his wife Mechelle of Herkimer, her brother, John Spellman and his wife Phyllis of Ilion, sisters, Katy Wilson of Herkimer and Mildred Falk and her husband Ed of Newport, six grandchildren, Kristen Schmid, Karen Schmid, Cassandra Beckman – Widay, Catherine Widay, Michael Widay and Carl Smith, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Also surviving are In-Laws, Dorothy Spellman, Frank and Jane Widay, Ted and Charlotte Widay, Stan and Josephine Bogdan, and Josie Widay. She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Spellman, and a sister, Mickey Murphy. Her memorial mass will be celebrated on Saturday March 5, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Francis de Sales Church, North Bellinger Street in Herkimer, with The Very Reverend Mark Cunningham, V.F., Pastor, officiating. Interment will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Newport in the spring. Immediately following the church service, all are invited to the Newport Masonic Lodge for fellowship. Those wishing are asked to consider donations to St. Francis de Sales Regional School in lieu of floral offerings.
