Obituary of Catherine Ruth (Borne) Hall

ILION – Mrs. Catherine Ruth (Borne) Hall, age 87, a longtime Ilion resident, died peacefully on Monday evening, March 28, 2016, at the Masonic Care Community of CNY. At the time of her passing she was surrounded by the comfort of her beloved family. Catherine was born on September 18, 1928, in Higginsville, Missouri, the daughter of the late Frank E. and Pearl M. (Ketner) Borne. She was a graduate of St. Teresa’s College in Kansas City, Missouri, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree and worked in newspaper advertising. On February 18, 1950, Catherine was married to the love of her life, Robert L. Hall, at St. Mary’s Catholic Parish in Higginsville, Missouri. In 1955, the couple moved their young family to Ilion and for the rest of her life there, Catherine actively supported her husband, children and community. Catherine was an accomplished artist whose work was shown at Utica’s Munson-Williams-Proctor Art Institute. She was also a talented seamstress, and, most importantly, a “stay-at-home” mom of six children. She very much enjoyed her memberships to the Ilion Hospital Guild, Ilion Historical Club, Ilion Garden Club, Friends of the Ilion Public Library and the Cedar Lake Ladies’ Golf Club. As a devout Catholic, she was a longtime parishioner of the Church of the Annunciation. Catherine will most be remembered for her ease of conversation, even with total strangers. She is survived by her husband of sixty-six years, Robert; her daughters and sons-in-law, Bettejo and Richard Caldwell, of Frankfort, Barbara and Stuart Strife, of Florida, and Mary and Thomas Lane, of Colonie, NY; and her sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Tanya Hall, of Arizona, Dr. William Hall, of New Mexico, and Michael and Judy Hall, of New York. She also leaves eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and her identical twin sister, Caroline R. Cummings, of Kansas. Besides her parents, Catherine was predeceased by her older sister, Dorothy Simpson. Friends and relatives are invited to attend calling hours from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM on Sunday, April 3, 2016, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home’s newly reopened and renovated home at 102 West St., Ilion. Catherine’s funeral service will take place on Monday, April 4, 2016, beginning at 9:30AM at the funeral home and at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Annunciation, Ilion, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Paul Catena, Pastor, assisted by Deacon James Bower. Procession will follow to Armory Hill Cemetery where Catherine will be laid to rest. For those wishing to do so, please consider memorial contributions to the Church of the Annunciation, 109 West Street, Ilion, NY 13357 or to Friends of the Ilion Public Library, 78 West Street, Ilion, NY 13357. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Anyone wishing to share a memory of Catherine or add to her online memorial may visit www.applegateandday.com.
