Obituary of Catherine K Merena

LITTLE FALLS-Catherine K. Merena, age 98, a long time Little Falls resident, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at Folts Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Herkimer. Born on May 1, 1918 in Little Falls, Catherine was the daughter of the late Maksym and Anna (Belniw) Kopek. Raised and educated locally she was a graduate of Little Falls High School Class of 1936. On May 11, 1946, she was united in marriage to Moxy Merena; the couple sharing a loving union of 47 years before his passing on November 16, 1993. Catherine was once employed as a bookkeeper in the accounting department at Cherry Burrell Corporation for 34 years. She also, at one time, worked for the Little Falls Felt Shoe Company and Remington Arms. At one time, she was very active and was a member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church and St. Anne’s Sisterhood. Prior to her husband’s passing, the couple enjoyed their time together and spending winters in Florida. Catherine was a devoted Little Falls basketball fan. She, her sister Olga, and her cousin Ollie rarely missed a game during her nephew Dick Andrews’s tenure as Little Falls basketball coach. She was always ready to travel to the away games, no matter what the weather. Catherine is survived by her sister, Olga Urich who now resides in Myrtle Beach, SC. She was predeceased by her brother John Kopek. Catherine leaves her niece Pat Andrews and husband Dick from Murrells Inlet, SC and her nephew Richard Urich and wife Brenda from Fort Myers, FL. She loved her great nieces and nephews and their growing families. Lynne Curtis and husband John and daughters Kaitlin and Lauren from Buffalo, Mike Andrews from Albany, Marcus Andrews and wife Erin and daughter Morgan from Clifton Park, Meghan Malone and husband Brian and sons Ben, Matt and Jack from Myrtle Beach, Brian Urich and daughter Natalia from Fort Myers and Jonathan Urich from Fort Myers. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects on Monday, May 16, 2016 from 10:00AM to 11:00 AM at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe Street, Little Falls, NY (315)823-2424. Catherine’s Funeral Service will take place at 11:00 AM at the funeral home following visitation. The family will then process to St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Herkimer where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband. Those wishing to make a contribution in Catherine’s memory may consider Hospice and Palliative Care; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
