Obituary of Elizabeth "Betty" Casadonte

ILION-MOHAWK – Elizabeth (Betty) Elinor (Pettengill) Casadonte, of Ilion, formerly of Mohawk, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 17, 2016, at Mohawk Valley Health Care Center, Ilion. She was born in Ilion, NY, on April 6, 1929, the daughter of Raymond A. Pettengill, Sr. and Harriette Evelyn (Buckley) Pettengill. She was educated in Annunciation Catholic School and graduated from Ilion High School in 1946. On September 19, 1952, she married Anthony Climek. He died on January 7, 1965. On March 29, 1968, she married Pasquale (Putch/PJ) Casadonte. He predeceased her in March of 2001. She worked for UNIVAC for several years and, at one time, was a dental receptionist for Dr. Fred Dutton, DDS, in Mohawk. She worked for the Mohawk Municipal Commission, first as a clerk typist, then as an account clerk typist, retiring in 1984. Betty was appointed to the Mohawk Municipal Commission Board in 2001, to complete PJ’s term as a Municipal Commissioner. She was reappointed to the board for the next ten years, retiring in 2011. Betty was an avid Bingo player, and she loved trips to Las Vegas, Atlantic City and the Turning Stone. She was a long time member and past President of the Crowley-Barnum Legion Post #25 Auxiliary, having held several offices in that organization. She was also active in the Herkimer County Legion Auxiliary, having held several offices with that organization, including past President. She was also a past President of the NYS Legion Auxiliary, Fifth District, a former member of the Herkimer County Democratic Women, the local Zonta Club, the Ilion Women of the Moose, and past President of the Mohawk Seniors. She is survived by her daughter, Lynda Baum, of Mohawk; her son, David (Sandy) Climek, of Stittville; her brother, Alan Pettengill, of Herkimer; a stepdaughter, Mary (Fran) Pizzo, of San Diego, CA; a stepson, John (Shirley) Casadonte, of Mohawk; grandchildren, Ryan (Liz) Baum, of Canastota, Michael (Gina) Climek, of Baton Rouge, LA, Joseph Climek and his fiancee, Melody King, of Webster, NY, Christine Pizzo, of San Diego, CA, Fran Pizzo, Jr., of San Diego, CA, Melissa (Mark) Morris, of Ilion, Kelly (Gino) DeCarlo, of Saratoga, Amy (Rick) Miller, of Mohawk, David (Julina) Cefaly, of High Point, NC, and Joseph (Lindsay) Cefaly, of Boylston, MA; two sisters-in-law, Jennie Pettengill, of Herkimer, and Joan Casadonte, of Mohawk; twenty great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends, including Marion and Bernie White and her best friend, Albert Perry. She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony Climek; an infant daughter, Kyle Anne Climek; her husband, PJ Casadonte; two brothers, Raymond Pettengill, Jr., and Richard Pettengill; and two sisters-in-law, Theresa and Philomena Casadonte. Friends and relatives are invited to attend calling hours on Saturday, May 21, 2016, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home’s original location at 102 West St., Ilion. The Crowley-Barnum American Legion Auxiliary service will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016, at 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home at 102 West St., Ilion. The Women of the Moose service will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016, at 2:45 p.m. Anyone wishing to share a memory of Betty, or add to her online memorial, may go to www.applegateandday.com.
