Obituary of Edna M. Werthman

UTICA/ILION – Mrs. Edna M. (McCumber) Werthman, age 73, currently of Utica, and formerly a longtime resident of Ilion, died unexpectedly on Wednesday evening, June 15, 2016, at the St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. Born on September 22, 1942, Edna was the daughter of the late Robert and Edna (Lasher) McCumber. She was raised and educated locally and was a graduate of Mohawk High School with the Class of 1960. Edna furthered her education at the Utica School of Commerce where she earned a two-year degree in business. On November 12, 1960, Edna was joined in marriage to Ronald F. “Ron” Werthman at the Ilion First Baptist Church, and the two shared in a devoted union of over 43 years, until Ron’s passing on February 19, 2004. As a couple, they dedicated themselves to working hard and raising their family. Edna’s working years began when she first finished college and went to work for Oneida National Bank in Ilion. From there, she began her career as a receptionist, first for Dr. Del Rosario for over twenty years, and then for Dr. Paula Vecchio, a position which she truly loved, and spent over twenty years building relationships with her co-workers and patients alike. Subsequently, she acquired her Real Estate License and practiced as an agent. Edna was a woman truly devoted to the well-being of her family and nothing made her happier than being in the company of her children and grandchildren. She was an excellent cook, and her friendly, spirited, outgoing personality was contagious. She held a fondness for hummingbirds, African violets, and kept herself active by walking daily. She was a member of the Mohawk Triangle #126 and a parishioner of the Jesus Never Fails Community Church in North Columbia. Forever in the hearts of those she leaves behind, Edna is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Lee Woolver, of Johnstown, and Denise and Ken Kurtz, of Tulsa, OK; her son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Jeannie Werthman, of Houston, TX; and six grandchildren, Matthew Miller, Taylor, Ben and Raygen Kurtz, and Carla and John Resendez. She also leaves her sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Woody Barrows, of IA; her brother and sister-in-law, Robert “Rob” and Linda McCumber, of Ilion; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins; and her in-laws, Daniel and Elaine (Werthman) LaBarge and Diane (Werthman) Vore. Besides her parents and husband, Edna was predeceased by her daughter, Cindy Werthman, on April 17, 2001; her brothers, Thomas McCumber and Melvin “Bubby” McCumber; and her sister, Patricia Guido. Friends and relatives are invited to attend Edna’s visitation, which will be held on Saturday morning, June 18, 2016, from 10:00 AM – 12 Noon, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home’s original location at 102 West Street, Ilion. Edna’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will take place at the funeral home on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at 12 Noon, immediately upon the conclusion of visitation, with Pastor Hans Drews of the Jesus Never Fails Community Church, officiating. Procession will follow to North Columbia Cemetery where Edna will be laid to rest beside her husband. Edna’s family wishes to thank the staff of Acacia Village, as well as the numerous friends that Edna made there throughout her stay. A special thank you to her longtime friend, Judy Boyd, for her support and kindness through the years.
