Obituary of Mary Stankewich

ST. JOHNSVILLE- Mrs. Mary Stankewich, passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on Friday morning June 17, 2016 at the St. Johnsville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. She was born on February 21, 1920 in Fonda, NY, a daughter of the late Samuel and Madeline (Giaquinto) Papa. On August 8, 1943 she was united in marriage with Sigmund “Ziggy” Stankewich at St. Patrick's Church in St. Johnsville. They shared 67 wonderful years together. Mary graduated from St. Johnsville High School. She was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Church and the church Rosary Society. She had spent many devoted years of her life to her husband and family, and was dedicated to her work career at Helmont Mills. She loved going to the Turning Stone Casino. Mary had an artistic flare to her. This was evident especially through the many lovely pieces of ceramic she assisted in creating at her ceramic shop that she owned in St. Johnsville for many years. She just loved to take walks throughout the Village of St. Johnsville. Survivors include her sister Theresa Dolan of St. Johnsville, and her many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great - great nieces and nephews. Preceding Mary in death were her parents. Her beloved husband Ziggy passed away on June 23, 2011. She was also predeceased by her siblings, sisters: Christine Denofrio, Rose Dolan, Rita Vincent, and Ann Pioggia, as well as her brothers, Dominick and John Papa. The family will be present at a graveside service at St. Johnsville Cemetery on Saturday June 25, 2016 at 10:00 AM. The Reverend David A. Johnson will offer committal prayer. There are no calling hours. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at St. Johnsville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for the love and care they gave to Mary while she was there. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations in Mary's name be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research. Envelopes will be available at the Enea Family Funeral Home.
