Obituary of Robert J. "Bob" Spellicy

MOHAWK – Mr. Robert J. “Bob” “Squeak” Spellicy, age 89, a lifelong Mohawk resident, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 25, 2016, at Valley Health Services, while holding hands with his beloved wife. Born on April 20, 1927, Robert was the son of the late Thomas and Laurena (Waldorf) Spellicy. He was raised and educated in Mohawk and attended local schools. When he was of age, Robert joined the ranks of the United States Army and proudly served his country during World War II, achieving the rank of Corporal. Upon his return from war, Robert met and fell in love with the former Joyce James while working for the railroad. On April 24, 1954, the two were married at the Church of the Annunciation in Ilion and recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. As a couple, Joyce and Bob were a social pair who truly took care of one another’s needs and were dedicated to a lifetime of fun, friendship, laughter and love. Hardworking by nature, Bob built his career working in Parts and Service for Quackenbush Auto Parts in Herkimer; then as Parts and Service Manager with Slabe’s Sales and Service in Little Falls, a company which began as a small automotive repair shop and grew to become a large dealership within the auto industry. For the last decade or so, Bob was employed with the Village of Mohawk and the Mohawk Municipal Commission, working part time to the ripe age of 88. Bob gave over 15 years of service to the Mohawk Fire Department and Alexander Hose Company. He was a present member of the Exempt Firemen’s Benevolent Association and a Life Member and Past Commander of the Crowley Barnum American Legion Post 25 in Mohawk. Bob was a well-known staple within his community and truly exemplified what it meant to come from the “Greatest Generation”. Squeak, as he was known to his friends and family, was a man who loved to have fun. His favorite times were when he was at the Legion, surrounded by his group of good and dedicated friends that he made throughout the years. He had a true knack for people and others took an instant liking to him. His family is truly grateful for all the outpouring of support and care shown to him throughout his life and especially throughout these last few challenging months. Last, but certainly not least, Bob was a man of family. He was proud of the daughters that he raised. When his grandchildren came along, they became his number one priority, and he was as involved as any grandparent could be, never missing an event or an opportunity to support them or to cheer them on. Bob’s legacy will be carried forward by those whom he loved so dearly during his time on this earth. He leaves his beloved wife, Joyce; his daughters and sons-in-law, Valerie and Jeffrey Strife, of Mohawk, and Barbara and Ronald Slack, of Frankfort; his grandchildren, Todd and Alaina (Valeriano) Phillips, Amanda (Phillips) and Matt Gallina, Spencer Strife and Shannon and Mike Raux; and several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clifford and Anita James, of Clayton, NY, as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Besides his parents, Robert was predeceased by his sister, Helen Schoonmaker; his brother, Thomas Spellicy (KIA WWII); sister-in-law, Donna Rose; and brother-in-law, Pete James. A special thank you is extended to the staff of the 6th Floor at St. Luke’s Hospital and to the staff of Valley Health Services for their kindness and care shown to Bob and his family. Bob’s family would like to invite his family and friends to come and have a beer on Squeak, and join them in celebrating a life well lived from 12 NOON – 2:00 PM on Sunday, July 10, 2016 at the Mohawk American Legion. Those who wish to do so are asked to consider memorial contributions to the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post #25, 43 W. Main Street, Mohawk, NY 13407, or to the Mohawk Exempt Firemen’s Benevolent Association, c/o Kenneth Palmer, 19 Walnut St., Mohawk, NY 13407. Envelopes will be available at the American Legion on Sunday. Squeak’s family will honor him in a private graveside gathering, where he will be laid to rest in Mohawk Cemetery. All service arrangements were pre-arranged and are under the direction of the Applegate-Day & Enea Family’s original location at 102 West Steet, Ilion, NY 13357, (315) 895-7722, Don Applegate and Martin L.
