Obituary of Bernard A Abt

ST. JOHNSVILLE – Mr. Bernard A. “Bernie” Abt, age 85, passed away in Staten Island, NY on Wednesday July 20, 2016. He was born on November 21, 1930 in Queens, NY a son of the late Martin and Abigail (Benjaminson) Abt. He was a graduate of Tottenville High School. His marriage to Judith A. “Judy” Greene took place August 25, 1984 at St. John’s Reformed Church in St. Johnsville. The couple shared in over 30 years of happily married years together. Judy passed away on February 17, 2015. Bernie was employed as a mechanic with the Staten Island DDSO. Bernie was a United States Navy Veteran of the Cuban Missile Crisis. He enlisted twice to serve our country, and was honorably discharged in 1963 with the rank of Machinist Mate, 1st Class. He was a proud member of the NRA, and a member of the Colonial Rifle and Pistol Club on Staten Island. Bernie's interests included black powder shooting, photography, and all types of history along with repairing anything mechanical. He is survived by his niece, Laurie (Sharpe) Lyga and her husband John of Indian Trail, North Carolina, and their children (Bernie’s great niece and nephew) Steven and Allyson, nephews, Robert Sharpe of Albany, Bryan Green and his wife Jana and their children (Bernie’s great niece and nephew) Collin and Hannah of Ilion, Keith Fical and Wendy and their children (Bernie’s great niece and nephew) Kali & Kolby of Ilion, and a niece Kim Fical and Taun of Utica, along with his sister – in – law, Edna Green of Dolgeville. Also surviving are Bernie’s neighbors, Debbie and Jim Gaynor, who were always there for Judy and Bernie and the family is so very grateful. He was predeceased by his wife, Judy, his parents Martin and Abigail, a sister-in-law, Jacqueline Sharpe and her husband Russell, and his brother-in-law Richard Green, and his father and mother – in – law, Alton and Celia (Guile) Grenne. His full military graveside funeral service will be held Tuesday July 26, 2016 at 11:00 AM in St. Johnsville Cemetery where a service will be offered with the Reverend David A. Johnson officiating. Friends and relatives are invited to attend. There are no calling hours at this time. His funeral arrangements are with The Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center Street in St. Johnsville, NY.
