Mervyn Hight, Sr.

Obituary of Mervyn A. Hight, Sr.

SCHUYLER – Mr. Mervyn A. Hight, Sr., age 87, a native and lifelong resident of Schuyler, went home to his Savior on Tuesday afternoon, July 19, 2016, after a brief illness. Born on June 24, 1929, Mervyn was the son of the late Henry and Sarah Elizabeth (Robbins) Hight. He was raised and educated in Schuyler and attended Frankfort-Schuyler schools. Mervyn discontinued his schooling at a young age to help tend to his ailing mother, but proudly earned his GED much later in his life. On September 30, 1950, Merv was wed to the former Nellie Maksymow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Herkimer. The two enjoyed a lifetime of love and happiness and shared common interests and hobbies. From the onset of their honeymoon in Niagara Falls, to their fondness of Alexandria Bay, and the many family picnics in the Adirondacks, together they travelled the state and enjoyed the great outdoors. Their bond was reinforced by the gift of their family and their love of the Lord, and they were blessed to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, shortly before Nellie’s passing on April 24, 2001. Mervyn went to work as a young man for the Union Fork and Hoe Company, and then for Univac, until getting a job at Remington Arms as a shipping and receiving clerk, a position which he held for many years until his retirement. An honest man who worked hard and enjoyed life’s simple gifts, Merv was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish, and tell stories. He raised his family to appreciate these same traditions, and nothing brought him more happiness than time spent picnicking at Nick’s Lake in Old Forge or playing a hand of poker, pinnacle or rummy with his children and grandchildren. Merv was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Little Falls. His personal relationship with Jesus Christ was his foremost priority. He led by example, sharing his faith with his wife, and together, they passed this on to their family. Merv leaves behind his beloved family to carry on his legacy. He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” Hight of San Antonio, Texas; his sons and daughters-in-law, Mervyn and Eunice Hight of Dolgeville and John and Heather Hight of Mohawk. Always close to his heart was the memory of his son, Thomas Hight, who passed away on September 26, 1999. Merv was also blessed with seventeen grandchildren, Michael Dauback, Sr., Jason Hight, Kevin Hight, Sarah Hight, Daniel Hight, David Hight, Joseph Hight, Hannah Hight, who greeted her grandfather in Heaven, MaryRose Hight, RuthAnn Hight, Stephanie Hight, Travis Hight, Danielle Hight, Elyssa Hight, Julia Hight, Casey Hicks and Aaron Hicks; as well as seven great-grandchildren, Hannah Dauback, Michael Dauback, Jr., Thomas Dauback, Zachary Dauback, Sophia Hight, Allison Hight and Jaxsen Hight. Merv joyfully awaited the birth of his first great-great granddaughter in November. He also leaves his brothers, Leland Hight and Calvin Hight, Sr., a special friend and neighbor for over sixty years, Jennie Domina, as well as many nieces and nephews, with special mention of his nephews, Calvin Hight and Robert Hight, who were always there to help their uncle with whatever he needed. Besides his parents, beloved wife, son, and granddaughter, Mervyn was predeceased by his brothers and sister-in-law, Floyd Hight and Frederick and Mary Hight, his sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Joseph Korba, and his in-laws, Rosemary Hight, Patricia Hight, Stella and Albert Adamko and Caroline and Walter Mosher. Friends and relatives are invited to attend Merv’s calling hours, which will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2016, from 1:00PM – 3:00PM at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road (Town of Frankfort) Ilion, NY (315) 894-8000. His funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence from the funeral home at 3:00PM, immediately upon the conclusion of visitation, with Reverend Chris Wintermute officiating. Burial will take place in East Schuyler Cemetery, where Merv will be laid to rest beside his wife, Nellie. Anyone wishing to do so, may consider memorial contributions to the Abraham House, 1203 Kemble Street, Utica, NY 13501 OR to Hospice and Palliative Care, 4277 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, NY 13413. A special thank you is extended to the caregivers and staff of the Abraham House and Hospice for making themselves available and providing the Hight family with guidance and support, throughout the last few weeks of Merv’s life, and Schuyler Ambulance for all their assistance.
