Obituary of Robert V. Pontius

LITTLE FALLS – Mr. Robert V. Pontius, was surrounded by his loving family upon his passing away at the age of 91 at Little Falls Hospital on July 22, 2016. He was born on December 1, 1924 in Sherburne Four Corners, NY, a son of the late Vinton and Gertrude (Mohr) Pontius. He was educated in Norwich and St. Johnsville schools. He served our country during World War II with the United States Navy and held the duty of Coxswain. Upon honorable discharge in 1946 he held the rank of 3rd Class Petty Officer and was the proud recipient of an American Theatre Medal, 2 stars, European African Middle Eastern Service medal, 8 stars, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. His marriage to the former Stephanie Shwaykoski took place on August 9, 1947 at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Little Falls. The couple had attended that church for many years. Bob was a Union Carpenter with HR Beebe Construction, Utica, NY. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post in Little Falls and a lifetime member of the Pontius Family National Association, as well as the SAR (Sons of the American Revolution). He is survived by his beloved wife, Stephanie, his daughters Joan Clanton and her husband Mark of Herkimer and Barbara Pelzer and her partner William Bovee of Little Falls and a son-in-law, David Pelzer, his sister, Joyce Ten Eyck of St. Johnsville, grandchildren, Jason Clanton and his wife Emily, Emily Pelzer, and Margaret Pelzer, great-grandchildren, Rory Clanton and Miri and Elias Clanton, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sisters, June Sabin and her husband Rex and Jean Van Valkenburg and her husband Francis, and a brother – in – law, Bernard Ten Eyck. His full military graveside memorial service will be held Saturday July 30, 2016 at 10:00 AM in St. Mary’s Cemetery, town of Herkimer. Friends and relatives are invited to attend. There are no calling hours at this time. His funeral arrangements are with The Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 West Monroe Street in Little Falls, NY. Funeral Directors Harry J. & Kevin E. Enea (315) 823-2424. The family is appreciative toward Little Falls Hospital for the wonderful care extended, as well as the Valley Health Services.
