Obituary of Rodney William Stewart

Mr. Rodney W. Stewart 84 a retired owner/operator of Dolgeville’s famous “Green Acres Drive In” died Saturday August 6th, 2016 at Basset Medical Center, Cooperstown where he was a patient since August 2nd.At the time of his passing his family was at his side offering prayers, love and support for him. Mr. Stewart was born in Little Falls, on July 19th, 1932 the son of the late Attorney Francis J. and Dorothy (Krell) Stewart and was a graduate of Dolgeville High School class of 1950. A veteran of the Korean War he served honorably in The United States Army from November 1952 until he was honorably discharged in November 1954. He served with Company K 19th Infantry Regiment, in Korea earning the rank of PFC and the following service medals, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and a Presidential Unit Citation. Prior to his military service he was employed by the General Electric Company of Utica, until he took over the ownership of Green Acres Drive in 1956. He developed it from a small ice cream stand to what is today, serving a variety of foods, sandwiches and soft ice cream.He retired from there in 1987 when he turned the business over to his daughter Ruth. The family is celebrating 60 years of services to the area. Rodney was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Little Falls, and was a 54 year member of the Dolgeville Masonic Lodge #796 F&AM. His personal delights were driving his 1951 tractor while maintaining his yard, along with taking rides throughout the area. He was inducted to the Dolgeville Football Hall of Fame in 2013.As a side note Rodney was a member of the first Dolgeville football team back in 1949 when the team only had 8 players. He is survived by his family, a Son and his wife Edson and Carol Stewart of Dolgeville, His daughters Sally Madison and her companion Gary Webb and Ruth and her husband Peter Jaikin both of Dolgeville, and Laura and Jeffrey George of Little Falls, a Brother Ronald Stewart of Ft. Myers,Fl. A Sister Ruth Miller of Roanoke,Virginia, His Grandchildren Jerrad Stewart, Shaad Madison, Alana Madison Evans, Julia Jaikin, Alyssa Ella George and Nathan Jeffrey George, his Great Grandchildren Tabatha, Samuel,Eric and Ella,his step grandchildren Jeanne & Roy Cool, Susan &Jeffrey Stalnaker, Cindy & John Sutton, Peter Jaikin Jr. and Kim & Donald Darling, several Nieces and Nephews. He was predeceased by a Brother Richard “Rit” Stewart on June 16, 2001. Funeral services will be held on Thursday August 11th, 2016 at 4:00 PM at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Albany Street Little Falls, with Rev. Dr. Steven A. Scarcia as celebrant. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Dolgeville Cemetery. The Family will receive friends at the church from 2PM until the time of the service. Memorials may be sent to Emmanuel Episcopal Church or to the American Heart Association in his memory. Envelopes will be available at the services. The Dolgeville Masonic Lodge will hold Ritualistic services at the Dolgeville Cemetery prior to the committal service and Military Honors.
