Obituary of Doris Bergin

ILION- Doris (Kennerknecht) Bergin, age 86, beloved wife of the late Honorable Herkimer County and Surrogate Court Judge John W. Bergin and a long time Ilion resident, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday morning, September 1, 2016 at Valley Health Services, Herkimer. Born in Utica on March 17, 1930, Doris was the daughter of the late Robert and Mildred (Chabot) Kennerknecht. She was raised and educated in Utica, and on October 23, 1952, was wed to John W. “Jack” Bergin. Sr. The couple shared in a blessed and devoted union of fifty-nine years, until Jack’s passing on May 27, 2012. For many years, Doris worked along with her husband Jack as an Administrative Assistant in his law practice. Quality time with her loved ones was what she treasured most. She was proud of her family, especially her grandchildren. During her leisure time, she loved to cook, play cards and golf. For more than 40 years, she and her husband enjoyed spending the winter months in their home in Estero, Florida. Doris was a parishioner of Annunciation Church of Ilion. Doris will be dearly missed by those she leaves behind. Survivors include her daughter, Mary Pat Finn of Florida; her son and daughter-in-law, John William and Karen Bergin, Jr. of Ilion; her cherished grandchildren, Patrick Connor Bergin and twins, Steven James and Michael John Bergin. She also leaves her sisters, Arlene Kennerknecht McNally of Whitesboro, Irene Kennerknecht Zeidler of Myrtle Beach and Joan Kennerknecht Kelly of Utica; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her three brothers, Robert, Alvin and Edward Kennerknecht and two sisters, Marion Kennerknecht Luley and Adaline Kennerknecht Halpin. It was Doris’s wish not to have public calling hours. Her Funeral Service and Celebration of Life will commence on Wednesday morning, September 7, 2016 at 10:30 AM from Annunciation Church, West Street, Ilion where her Mass of Christian Burial will be officiated by Reverend Paul Catena, Pastor. Procession will follow to Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Annunciation Church or St. Jude’s Children Hospital; envelopes will be available at the church.
