ST. JOHNSVILLE – World War II Veteran and lifelong beloved resident of St. Johnsville, NY, Mr. Carleton F. “Carlie” Rider, age 100, entered into eternal rest in the presence of his loving family on September 22, 2016 at his home. He was born on January 29, 1916 in St. Johnsville, NY, a son of the late Wallace W. and Maude (Ruller) Rider. He was a lifelong area resident and was educated in local schools, a graduate of St. Johnsville High School, ‘Class of 1935’. His marriage to Catherine L. Stever took place May 28, 1948 in Fort Plain, NY. The couple had been members of the Grace Christian Church of St. Johnsville since 1956. Mrs. Rider passed away on July 18, 2015. He retired from Helmont Mills in St. Johnsville as an intricate part of Cost Analysis. In January 1942 Carlie enlisted with the United States Army. He served our country during World War II overseas. He was the proud recipient of the American Service Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal as well as the Good Conduct Medal. He received his honorable discharge in November, 1945. Reflecting back upon his service to our country, it is fondly remembered that Carlie was in the last Calvary Unit in the Army in Fort Riley, Kansas, prior to that particular unit being disbanded. His life revolved around his family and he especially loved the community of St. Johnsville, NY. April 11, 1946 marked the beginning of Carlie’s over 70 year commitment to the St. Johnsville Masonic Lodge #611, Free and Accepted Masons. He was a Grand Representative to Denmark, Representing the State of New York. For upwards and just as many years his family is honored to remember his commitment to the St. Johnsville American Legion Morris J. Edwards Post #168, of which he was a member for just as many years. Looking back through the years, it is with great admiration that we remember Carlie’s presence within the sporting world as well. He was very successful in the fields of amateur baseball, football and basketball. He actually played Class ‘D’ baseball in Utica. In high school, he pitched an 18 strike-out game; what an accomplishment! He was offered a football scholarship at St. Bonaventure University, leaving it behind to focus on amateur baseball which he even managed at one time. He is survived by a son Calvin F. Rider (Susan) of Gloversville, a daughter, Natalie Weaver of Clearwater, Florida, his grandchildren, Charles Weaver, Jr. (Terri), Dana Lindamood (Barry), Aimee Ross (Ken), Kelly Horne (Drew), Suzann Weaver (Deb), Jody Weaver, Stephanie Richards (Russell), and Christopher Rider (Stacey), 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, a sister, Jeanette Bundyk of St. Johnsville, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Carlie was predeceased by loving family members inclusive to his wife, Catherine, his parents Wallace and Maude, as well as his siblings, his brothers Joseph (Ethel), Thomas (Ann), William (Shirley and Verna), and Phillip, as well as sisters Mildred Chandler (Glenn) and Lydia Carter (Hank). Funeral Services will be held on Friday September 30, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Grace Christian Church, 20 Center Street in St. Johnsville, with Pastor Martin Glynn officiating with burial to follow at West St. Johnsville Cemetery. Full military rites shall be accorded. Calling hours at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center Street in St. Johnsville are on Thursday Sept. 29, 2016 from 4 o'clock until 6 o’clock PM. Fellow members of the St. Johnsville American Legion Post will meet at the funeral home Thursday at 5PM for services and the St. Johnsville Masonic Lodge will conclude the calling hours with ritual at 6PM. The family is very appreciative of the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice who took such wonderful care of Carlie and his family.
