Leona Holden

Obituary of Leona J. Holden

Mrs. Leona J. “Onie” Holden, who lived a beautiful and fulfilling 90 years, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, October 25, 2016, at Home Life at Folts, where she has resided for the past nine years. At the time of her passing, Leona had the love and support of her devoted daughter-in-law by her bedside. Born in Frankfort, on June 5, 1926, Leona was the daughter of the late Lyle Clarence and Emilien (Farley) Trevor. She was raised and educated locally and was a graduate of St. Francis de Sales Catholic schools. Upon completion of her education, Onie met and fell in love with Mr. LaVal “Val” R. Holden, and the two were married on December 13, 1947. They shared in a blessed union of almost 53 years, until Mr. Holden’s passing on October 10, 2000. As a couple, Onie and Val were well known within their community. They dedicated themselves to raising their three sons and even went one step beyond that, by keeping their door open to family and friends. They were known by many within the Ilion community as “Mother” and “Father”, and were always involved in the various local clubs and organizations, including the Moose, Elks and VFW. They treasured summers spent at their camp at Kring’s Point on the St. Lawrence River and time spent with Dorothy and Dick Caulkins at their camp in Speculator. Onie was happiest when surrounded by friends and the ones she loved. She had a deep affection and connection to each of her three sons, their wives and their children. She is survived by her son and daughters-in-law, Butch and Sue Holden of Florida and Lois (Maley) Holden of Preble, NY. Always close to her heart were the memory of her sons, Kim Holden and Scott Holden, who preceded Leona in death. She also leaves her grandchildren, Jackie Lee Holden, Trevor and Mary Holden, Candace and Charlie Gage, Esther Holden, Jason and Stephanie Holden, Justin Holden, Graham and Audrey Holden and Zach Holden; as well as numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Deborah (Gay) Call of Mohawk and Judy (Casey) Nudo of Herkimer also loved Leona and mourn her passing. Grateful appreciation is extended to all the nurses and caregivers at Folts who provided compassionate care to Leona for so many years. In keeping with Leona’s wishes, there will be no public calling hours or funeral at this time. A graveside service will take place in Litchfield Cemetery, where Leona will be laid to rest beside her husband, Val. All funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Don Applegate and Martin L. Ciaccia, Funeral Directors of the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 102 West Street, Ilion, NY 13357 (315) 895-7722.
