Obituary of Lena Sudakow

HERKIMER-Mrs. Lena (Fiorentino) Sudakow, age 94, of Herkimer, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at the Masonic Care Community of CNY, where she has resided in the Queens Household for the past three and a half months. Born on October 3, 1922, Lena was one of eleven children to the late Dominick and Lucia Fiorentino. She was married on June 21, 1941 to Joseph Sudakow, who preceded her in death. She was also predeceased by her oldest son, Richard, who passed at an early age, and by her daughter-in-law, Linda (Rando) Sudakow. In 1957, Lena had the honor of being nominated for mother-of-the-year…and won! She couldn’t lose with such a big family supporting her with votes. Her prize was a wonderful trip to New York City, which she really enjoyed. During the early 1960’s, she and her husband bought a diner in Utica and named it Lucy’s Diner after her oldest daughter. They successfully ran the business for many years, and made many longtime friends there. Later in life, you could find Lena in Herkimer, working as a crossing guard. She had an affection for safely guiding the children across the street and always did so with a smile. She was an amazing cook, helping cater events at the Herkimer VFW for many years, sometimes even leaving the kitchen to grace the dance floor during a great song. Everyone enjoyed watching Lena dance, eating her cuisine, and just being around her; she was the constant entertainer and brought joy to all who knew her. When she wasn’t working or with her family, she enjoyed playing Bingo and no matter where she went, she always made new friends. Lena is survived by her children, Lucy and Jack Evans, Julia and Andy Reals, Joseph Sudakow (who lived with his mother and helped her to aspire to the age of 94), Harold and Joann Sudakow, and Adeline and James Wixson. She also leaves six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; her sister, Adeline LaGess; her brothers, Michael Fiorentino and Kelly Fiorentino; her in-laws; and her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, who were quite fond of their Aunt Lena. She will be missed by all and remembered by many, for her stories, laughter and great cooking. “Hungry? Give me 5 minutes and I’ll have it ready...” Friends and relatives are invited to attend Lena’s calling hours, which will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 from 5:00PM – 7:00PM at the Enea Family Funeral Home (FKA Holleran Funeral Service), 220 North Washington St., Herkimer, NY (315) 866-1011. Members of the Young at Heart Senior Citizens are asked to gather at 6:00PM and members of the VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary are asked to gather at 6:30PM at the funeral home, where ritualistic services will be offered. Lena’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Thursday morning, November 10, 2016 at 8:15AM from the funeral home and at 9:00AM at Sts. Anthony & Joseph Church in Herkimer, where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. Quy Vo, Pastor. Procession will follow to Calvary Cemetery where Lena will be laid to rest beside her husband. Lena’s funeral arrangements were prearranged with Harry J. and Kevin E. Enea, Funeral Directors.
