Obituary of Herbert "Herbie" R. Hagadorn

MOHAWK – Herbert “Herbie” R. Hagadorn, age 84, of E. Center St., Mohawk, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica, with his loving family by his side. Herbert R. Hagadorn was born in Cedarville, NY, in the home of his parents, Loren and Helen (Gay) Hagadorn, on November 7, 1932. He left home at the young age of 17 to enlist in the US Army during the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1952. Upon returning home in 1954, he married Shirley (Macrina) who blessed him with five children. She died in 1987. He was employed as a machine operator for 28 years at Remington Arms, retiring in 1992. He later remarried Debra Sitterly on February 5, 1993, in Ilion, and continued to raise her son. Herbie was very active in coaching children in Bush League of Cedarville and Little League of Mohawk. He himself played in the Over 30 Softball League until his last game at the age of 65. He was also very active in bowling as a director of the Bowling Association for some 50 years plus was coordinator of the Elks yearly bowling tournament for many years. His dedication to the Herkimer Elks was with his full heart. He was also a member and treasurer for 25 plus years with the Cedarville Fire. Dept. His accomplishments included achieving National All American Chaplin and Exaulted Ruler of Herkimer Elks Lodge as well as Elk of the year and a member of many committees and proudly served them. Herbie was very instrumental and was a loyal participant in the fun and playing in the Cerebral Palsy softball tournaments for 19 years. As a cancer and heart attack survivor, he supported the Relay for Life and Heart Run and Walk. Herbie adored the children in his life. Christmas especially touched his heart when family was together. The sounds of children just melted him. He was a man of very few words but the expressions and Poppy Hugs were priceless. He was very proud of all his children for their accomplishments and love in their lives. When asked what he would want told he said “show respect to everyone in your lives”. He truly loved God and his country, along with the many friends and especially family in his life. He is survived by his wife, Debra; his daughters, Michele Dziuban and husband, Joe, of W. Winfield, Beth Callahan and her partner, Steve, of Utica, and Kim Hackley and her husband, Brian, of Bridgewater; his sons, Donald Hagadorn and his wife, Janice, of W. Winfield, Jeffrey Hagadorn and partner, Carrie, of Mohawk, and Philip Hall and his wife, Melissa, of Mohawk; his sister, Ruth Clisham; as well as grandchildren, Michael and wife, Keri, Andrea and Nicole Hagadorn, Tamra Hagadorn, Colin and Cameron Hall, Matt and his wife, Nicole, Steve and his wife, Laura, Jeremy Dzuiban and his wife, Courtney, Elaine Denton and husband, Matt, Brenton Hackley and his wife, Kelly, Amanda Roe and husband, Frank, and Alisha Callahan; many great-grandchildren; his in-laws, Cathy Miller, Paula Hagadorn and Robert and Lucille Sitterly, along with Daniel and Misa Sitterly, and Randy and Patty Sitterly; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his canine companion, Gypsy. He was predeceased in death by his first wife, Shirley; his mother and father; as well as three brothers, Raymond, Harry and Ronald. Calling hours will be held Thursday, March 16, 2017, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home’s original location at 102 West St., Ilion. The Herkimer Elks Lodge will conduct their Ritualistic Service on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and the Cedarville Fire Dept. service will be held on Thursday at 5:45 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home immediately after calling hours on Thursday, March 16, 2017, at 6:00 p.m., with Rev. Brian Engel officiating.
