Obituary of Theresa Doris Burney

LITTLE FALLS- Doris Cannon Burney, age 93, passed away on May 29, 2017 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica.    Doris had recently moved to Valley Residential in Herkimer, NY after living in Little Falls for many years.

Theresa Doris Cannon was born April 26, 1924 in Albany, NY to Regina Murphy and George Kingston Cannon.  She graduated from St. Mary’s  Academy , Little Falls, in 1941.  She was employed at the Herkimer County Trust Company and at H.P. Snyder during World War II.

Doris married Thomas G. Burney on February 8, 1947.  They had two daughters, Dena Ann and Kim Maureen.

Doris was President of Alpha Beta Gamma Delta Society.  She was Vice Chairman of the Herkimer County Democratic Committee from 1948-1966; President of the St. Mary’s Rosary Society; Treasurer of Little Falls Hospital Guild and Charter Secretary of the Little Falls Lady Elks.

After relocating to New Hartford, NY in 1967, Doris was employed by New York Telephone Company and she attended MVCC.  In 1973, the family moved to Sewickley, PA.  Doris attended Robert Morris College and was a licensed real estate agent.  She was also Chairwoman of the Volunteers at Sewickley Valley Hospital and a member of the Garden Club and the Hospital Guild.

Upon moving to Miami Lakes, FL in 1978, Doris attained her National Certificate for Apartment Management and Certificate for Property Management.  She managed the Executive Apartments in Miami Lakes on behalf of the Graham Company.

Returning to New Hartford in 1987, Doris was employed in the office of Dr. Joseph LaBarbera until 1995.

In 1996, she returned to her “beautiful Mohawk Valley” where she renewed old friendships and made many new ones.  Her happiest times there were spent with her dear friend, Erich Kupfer and with her Monday and Thursday Bridge Ladies.

Doris cared for her daughter, Kim, through a long illness until her death on December 9, 1998.

She is survived by her daughter, Dena Burney Raymer of New Hartford, her sister, Nadine Cannon Tedrowe of Little Falls as well as nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by Kim and by her son in law, William Raymer who died April 11, 2016.  She was also predeceased by her sister Adele Cannon Shepardson.

Memorial visitation will be held on Saturday June 3, 2017 from 10:30AM-11:30AM at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe Street, Little Falls, NY 13365 (315) 823-2424. A funeral service will be held following visitation at 11:30 AM at the funeral home. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Mom,  You were the best.  Kim and I always knew we had your unconditional love and support.  I will treasure our many adventures together – especially “Tuesdays with Doris”.  Love you always, Dena
