Obituary of Dorothy DeAngelis Dharni

NORTH CAROLINA – Dorothy DeAngelis Dharni, 88, passed away June 5, 2017 at Croasdaile Nursing Home in Raleigh, North Carolina. Dorothy was born in Schenectady, New York on October 26, 1928, to Anthony and Helen (Massari) DeAngelis. She grew up and attended grade school in Scotia, New York, until the family relocated to Canajoharie, New York in 1940. Dorothy graduated from Canajoharie Central School in 1947, as Class Valedictorian. She attended Cornell University on scholarship, graduating in 1951. She then received a Master’s Degree from Columbia University. She also completed all course requirements for her Ph.D. from Columbia University, except for her dissertation.

 

Dorothy worked in New York City for a public relations firm for a few years before accepting a teaching position at Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey. There she taught English, became English Department Supervisor, Dean of Women and Assistant Principal. She also taught English courses at Montclair State University for several years.

 

Dorothy retired in 1984 and moved to Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, where she resided until her death. She took advantage of the senior educational programs at both University of North Carolina and Duke University. She greatly enjoyed her association with a Retired English Professors’ Book Discussion Group. Dorothy is survived by her two brothers, Donald D. DeAngelis of Delmar, New York and Richard L. DeAngelis of Asheville, North Carolina as well as several cousins, nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her husband, mother and father.

 

In accordance with her wishes, no memorial service will be conducted. Interment in family plot will be in St. Johnsville, New York Cemetery.
