Obituary of Donald W. Hammond

ILION – Donald W. Hammond, age 95, passed away on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at St. Luke’s Hospital, New Hartford.

 

He was born on May 4, 1922 in Ilion, the son of Fred and Christine (Sorensen) Hammond.  Don attended Ilion schools and graduated from Utica College in 1952.  He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific and European Theaters with the US Army.

 

On August 16, 1948, he married Ella Dyme Momberger, a blessed union of 68 years.  Don retired from St. Elizabeth Medical Center in 1985.  Previously, he had been employed by several local firms.  He was a member of St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, of Ilion, Ilion Elks lodge and was a former member of the Cedar Lake Club.

 

He is survived by his beloved wife, Ella Dyme; his three daughters and sons-in-law, Christine and Chris Dengler, of North Syracuse, Margaret and Ricky Staulters, of Galway Lake, NY and Ella and Steven Cointot, of Lafayette, LA; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was predeceased by his sisters, Margaret Scott, Christina Wilfert and Frances Rowland; and two brothers, Miles and Fred.

 

Friends and relatives are invited to a memorial visitation on Sunday, July 9, 2017, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home’s original location at 102 West St., Ilion.  Don’s Memorial Service will be held at the conclusion of visitation at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home, with Bishop Daniel Herzog, officiating. Military Honors will follow.

In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, 78 Second St., Ilion, NY 13357.  Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

 

Don’s service arrangements and supervision are entrusted to his family Funeral Director, Don Applegate.
