Obituary of Barbara J. Norman

ILION: Barbara “Barb” Jean Norman (née Hultquist) died peacefully at the Mohawk Valley Health Care Center in Ilion, New York on July 21, 2017 due to complications from pneumonia and dementia. She was 88.

Barb was born on July 19, 1929 in Rochester, New York to her parents, Frank and Pearl (Robinson) Hultquist.

The Hultquists later moved from Rochester to Ottawa, Canada. Barb attended school in Ottawa and graduated from the High School of Commerce in Ottawa. She met her husband Victor Byers Norman while in high school and they were married in Ottawa, August 18, 1946.

They had two children: Victor Barrie Norman, Jr. in 1949 and Gary Jeffrey Norman in 1954, both born in Ottawa, Canada.

The Norman family moved from Canada and lived in Ilion, New York for over 60 years.

Barb was devoted to and loved her family. She was a wonderful mom, grandmother, and wife. Barb and her husband ran Norman’s General Contracting, Inc. in Ilion where she served as Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer for over fifty years. She was a member of the Herkimer County Republican Party Committee for several years and worked to elect George H. W. Bush for president.  She was a terrific person in every respect and everyone who met her thought so as well.

She is survived by her husband, Victor Norman, Sr. of Herkimer; her sons and daughters-in-law, Victor Norman, Jr. and Becky of Herkimer and Gary Norman and Kim of Ilion; her three grandchildren and their spouses, Jessica (Norman) and Ryan Canipe, Jennifer (Norman) and Jody Wheet, and Gary Norman, Jr.; and five great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Pearl Hultquist; her sister, Norma Pearl (Hultquist) Elliot; and her brother, Terrence “Terry” Wayne Hultquist.

A viewing for family and friends to honor Barb will take place on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 from 4PM to 7PM at the Enea & Ciaccia Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Ilion, NY (315)894-8000.  All are encouraged to attend and share thoughts and memories of Barb. Burial will take place privately for the family at Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion, NY.  

The family would like to thank the staff of both the Mohawk Valley Health Care Center in Ilion and St. Luke’s Hospital for the wonderful care they gave to Barb.
