Obituary of Bernard "Scott" Hecox
PLATTSBURGH – Mr. Bernard “Scott” Hecox, age 59, a native of Little Falls and currently of Plattsburgh, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, August 3, 2017, while playing a game of Pickle Ball, a newfound sport he discovered with a great community of friends.
Born on June 8, 1958, Scott is the son of Marlyn June (Brewer) Hecox and the late Bernard Ward Hecox. He was a graduate of Little Falls High School with the Class of 1976 and went on to obtain his Bachelor’s in Physical Education from SUNY Cortland. He was a tremendous athlete throughout his school years and lettered in two sports.
On April 8, 1989, he was married to the former Kim Lumley in Dolgeville and the two shared in a blessed union of over 28 years. As a couple, they shared in a mutual respect and devotion to one another and were steadfast in the raising of their daughters.
Scott was extremely hard working by nature, and at one time was employed with the Herkimer County Job Training Partnership Act. He then spent many years as the Director of NYS Children and Family Services for the Adirondack Wilderness Challenge, a position from which he recently retired.
Scott was a well-rounded individual who became involved in many different pastimes throughout the years. He was an accomplished woodworker, who was extremely talented within his craft, building his own cedar strip kayak and each of his daughters paddleboards. Friends lovingly referred to him as a ‘Renaissance Man.’ As of late, he had even initiated plans to build a houseboat.
He held an avid interest in local history and enjoyed his time spent in his hometown of Little Falls as well as being in the great outdoors of the Adirondacks. Some of his many hobbies included boating, hiking, kayaking, and photography.
Scott will be remembered for being a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and a true gentleman to all who knew him. “May his smile stay with us always…”
Survivors include his wife, Kim; his mother, Marlyn, of Little Falls; his daughters, Meghan Hecox of Wilmington, NC and Caitlyn Hecox of Glenwood Springs, CO; his sisters, Cynthia Wilson and husband, Jerry of Annandale, VA, and Andrea Littlejohn and Bill Ginther of Fairport, NY; his mother-in-law, Nancy Lumley of Dolgeville; his brother-in-law, Robert Lumley, Jr. and wife, Kathy of Schenectady; and his sister-in-law, Stacey Lumley of Little Falls. He also leaves his nephew, Jack Lumley; his nieces, Jessie Wilson and Kylie Lumley; his aunts, Nadine Marchese and Sophia Hooks; as well as several cousins, and many friends.
Besides his father, he was predeceased by his father-in-law, Robert Lumley, Sr.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend calling hours on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 from 5:00PM – 7:00PM at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 West Monroe St., Little Falls, NY (315) 823-2424.
