Obituary of David R. "Butch" Moynihan
MOHAWK – Mr. David R. “Butch” Moynihan, age 73, a lifelong Mohawk Valley resident, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday afternoon, August 6, 2017.
Born on June 20, 1944, David was the son of the late Donal and Florence (Lozo) Moynihan. He was raised in Ilion and attended local schools. At one time, David shared in a marriage with the former Kathleen Marmet, and to this day they shared a close friendship and special bond.
David enlisted with the US Army in 1961 and proudly served his country during the Vietnam Era.
Butch was a hard worker and spent 35 years as a machine operator with Remington Arms until his retirement in 2006. Concurrently, he held a part-time position with the Applegate & Day Funeral Home and Monument Service.
He was well-liked by those in his community and was very involved with its various organizations. He was a life member and past Commander of the Crowley-Barnum Mohawk American Legion Post 25, a member of the Mohawk Volunteer Fire Department, Ilion Knights of Columbus, and the Penn Yan Moose Club. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting and being outdoors.
Survivors include his other half, Kathy Moynihan of Mohawk; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Joanne Moynihan of Ilion; his grandchildren, Joshua Moynihan and Nicole Moynihan; his stepson, Shawn and Suzanne McGraw; his step-grandchildren, Nicole, Jocelyn and Emma; his sisters and brother-in-law, Joyce and Nelson Johnson of Mohawk, Joanne Matthews of Auburn, Rose Brown of Brockton, MA and Diane Bailey of Mohawk; his brother, William Moynihan of Mohawk; his sisters-in-law, Della Moynihan of Broadalbin, NY and Isabella “Dolly” Moynihan of Ilion; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Pamela J. “Pam” Moynihan on August 13, 2006, his sister, Eileen Krowicki, and his brothers, Donal “Sam” Moynihan and Michael Moynihan.
In accordance with Dave’s wishes, there will be no formal services at this time. He will be laid to rest with his father in Mohawk Cemetery at the convenience of his family. For those wishing to do so please consider memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, 100 Lomond Court, Utica, NY 13502.
