Obituary of Carmel D. (Barberio) Eddy

ILION – Mrs. Carmel D. (Barberio) Eddy, age 92, a lifelong Herkimer and Ilion resident, passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2017, in her home, with loving people around her.

Carmel was born on September 26, 1925 in Herkimer, a daughter of the late Dominick and Mary (Caivana) Barberio. She was educated in Herkimer schools, graduating with the Class of 1943. Carmel was a proud “South Sider” of Italian descent. As a young woman, she was planning a career in fashion design in New York City, but her plans were cut short due to her brothers enlisting to serve in World War II. Around that same time, her father became ill and was in need of Carmel and her mother’s care at home.

On June 12, 1954, Carmel was married to Robert S. Eddy in St. Anthony’s Church in Herkimer by Rev. Gustave Purificato. Together, they enjoyed a loving union of nearly 56 years, until Mr. Eddy’s passing in 2010. Carmel was of the Catholic faith and was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church early in her life; later attending Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church in Frankfort. She shared her strong faith in God with everyone and prayed the rosary daily.

Mrs. Eddy was very proud of the fact that her and Bob built their own house, which she still resided in to this day. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She had a strong fashion sense and was a consummate professional during her career. Her working years began at Remington Rand Univac in Ilion, and then in 1968 she began her employment with the Remington Arms Company, retiring in 1990 after 23 years of faithful service. She enjoyed all the friends and coworkers she met during her years spent there.

Carmel enjoyed camping at Nick’s Lake in Old Forge with her husband and sons, but her real source of joy were her vacations in Florida with her family, and her special brother, Francis. She never forgot anyone’s birthday and always made certain the holidays around the house were special. She enjoyed her close bond with her many Siamese cats that she had over the years. They were a great comfort to her, as she was a true cat person!

Survivors include her loving sons and daughter-in-law, Mark R. and Leslie (Steele) Eddy of Ilion and Robert J. Eddy of Forest Hills, Queens; her niece, Joan and Frank Rudy of Belleville, NJ; her sisters-in-law, Louise Eddy and Carm Eddy; her niece Connie Eddy and Brian Thomas; her nephews, Dale and Charlene Lewis and Ray and Joelle Eddy; great-nieces, great-nephews; and other family members, and cousins, Gene and Cathy Saunders and family. She also leaves her special friends, Antonio Placanica, Martha Cobb, Jill Van Valkenburg, Al and Eleanor Mirabito, and all of the Steele family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert in 2010; her parents, Mary and Dominick Barberio; brothers, Francis D. Barberio and Gregory Barberio; and her sister, Catherine (Barberio) Ehman.

Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects on Monday evening, October 30, 2017 from 4:00PM to 7:00PM at the Enea & Ciaccia Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Town of Frankfort, Ilion, NY (315) 894-8000.

Carmel’s funeral service will commence on Tuesday morning, October 31, 2017, at 9:45AM at the funeral home and at 10:30AM at Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church in Frankfort, where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. Paul Catena, Pastor, assisted by Deacon James Bower. Procession will follow to Calvary Cemetery on West German Street in Herkimer.

Carmel’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Mary Tubia of Trusted Friends Home Care and her excellent caregivers, Kelly Kirk, Missy Harris, Jody Ingraham, Krissy Newtown, Karen Baker, Maggie Tillson, Jamie Conley and Andy Lamica, and neighbors, Shelly Morris and Andy Vandawalker, for the comfort and care provided. Also, an ode of gratitude is given to the Ilion police and fire department for their response and efforts.

In lieu of floral offerings, kindly consider contributions in Carmel’s memory to the Catholic Charities Ride Program OR to the Herkimer County Humane Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
