Obituary of Gladys C. Hefner
FUNERAL SERVICES RESCHEDULED FOR WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8th
HERKIMER: Gladys C. Hefner, age 93, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 27, 2017 at Folts Home, Herkimer. At the time of her passing, she was surrounded by the love and support of her family by her side.
Born in Herkimer on September 23, 1924, Gladys was the daughter of the late John and Hazel (Elmer) Wedemeyer. She attended Frankfort and Ilion schools and was a graduate of Ilion High School Class of 1942. A veteran of the United States Army, she honorably and proudly served her country from 1944-1945 during World War II. On June 22, 1945 Gladys was united in marriage to Harold Hefner, Sr, in Modesto, California and the couple lived in Arizona for 21 years before coming back to the Mohawk Valley. Mr. Hefner passed away in 1992.
In her earlier years, Gladys was employed by UNIVAC as a key punch operator. She held life memberships in the following organizations: the Mohawk American Legion and was also a past Adjutant, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Herkimer, the DAV in Phoenix, AZ, the Herkimer Polish Community Home, and was a member of the Pearl Harbor Surviving Spouses Organization of Phoenix, AZ and the Royal Neighbors of America and past Oracle. Gladys was also a member of the Grace Episcopal Church, Mohawk.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda VanDelinder of Herkimer; her grandchildren, Jeffrey and Barbara Kotary, Jon Adam and Danielle Kotary, Harold and Kimberly Hefner III, Jason Burton and Andrew and Shannon Burton; her great-grandchildren, Jacob, Karlee, Sara, Adena, Eva and Wolfgang and Sidney and her great-great-grandchild, Finlee. She also leaves her brother, Donald Wedemeyer of Mohawk; her sisters, Janice and Richard Normand of Connecticut, Sandra Murray of Kansas and Sharon and Spencer Bennett of Herkimer; her inlaws, Theresa Hefner of Rochester and Kenneth Marmet of Penn Yan; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her son, Harold Hefner, Jr.; her daughter, Lorine Marmet; her son-in-law, Carl VanDelinder; her great- grandson, Athens A. Kotary and several brothers and sisters.
Funeral services have been rescheduled for WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2017. Friends and relatives are invited to attend visitation from 10:00AM – 11:00AM at the original Enea Family Funeral Home (FKA Holleran Funeral Service), 220 North Washington Street, Herkimer (315) 866-1011. Gladys’ Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00AM at the funeral home, immediately upon the conclusion of visitation. Procession will follow to Oak Hill Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest.
For those wishing to do so, please consider memorial contributions in Gladys' name to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
