Obituary of Frank J. Slabe
SANDY LANE MOHAWK – Mr. Frank J. Slabe passed away on Wednesday November 15, 2017 in Syracuse, NY at the age of 93.
He was born July 4, 1924 in the town of German Flatts, NY a son of the late Jacob and Alzbeta (Mizerak) Slabe. He was educated in the German Flatts schoolhouse and went on to attend Mohawk schools. He served our country with the United States Army from 1948 until 1950. He was married for 37 years to Elva Jean Weakley and she died on April 11, 1989. He worked on the farm and did logging in the summers from 1942 until 1947 and then from 1950 until 1952. He then went on to work for his brother as a mechanic with Slabe’s Sales and Service from 1952 until 1987. Frank made his own sawmill and cut lumber and did woodworking after his retirement from 1987 until the present.
He is survived by his children Lillian Swanson and her husband Charles of West Winfield, Darlene Zambri and her husband John of Little Falls, Allen Slabe and his wife Karen of Gastonia, North Carolina, and Brad Slabe and his wife Jennifer of Mohawk, 11 grandkids, 17 great-grandkids and one great-great grandchild as well as a sister-in-law June Slabe. He was predeceased by his siblings, John Slabe (Frances), Edward Slabe, and Olga Celebi (James) and a son-in-law, Robert Stickles. Frank was blessed to have shared the companionship of 26 years to Mary George, and her family became his also. Mary predeceased him July 13, 2014. In the past few years Frank re-connected with his grade school friend Roger Harper and they enjoyed weekly get – togethers.
Calling hours will be held 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 18, 2017, at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 West Monroe Street in Little Falls, NY. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Joelle Faulks, Pastor of Herkimer First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Newport Cemetery, Newport with military honors. Those wishing may consider a donation in Frank’s memory to Valley Health Services toward the activities department. The family is very grateful for the wonderful care at Valley Health Services during Frank’s rehabilitation visits there. Also, a very special thank you to Doctor Ali Khan and those at the SUNY Upstate Community General Hospital Campus where Frank passed away.
