Obituary of Joseph H. Mogensen

ILION – Mr. Joseph H. Mogensen, age 95, a lifelong Ilion resident, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, November 22, 2017, at the Mohawk Valley Health Care Center.

Born on February 18, 1922, Joseph was the son of the late Harold P. and Mary (Dorn) Mogensen. He was raised and educated locally, graduating from Ilion High School. In 1942, Joseph enlisted with the United States Navy and honorably served as a hospital apprentice throughout World War II. He was married to the former Amy Mead, and the two shared in a blessed union until her passing.

Joe was a hardworking man who was owned and operated Mogensen’s Contracting & Farming in Ilion. Throughout the years, he made many friends both at work and in his social life. He enjoyed his times with friends at Dunkin Donuts and the former Chet’s Restaurant in Herkimer. He was quite the character who always had a good story and he will be remembered for his outgoing personality and sense of humor.

Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Mary “Honey” and Bob Rivard of Massachusetts; his sister-in-law, Ona Mogensen of Ilion; and numerous nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Harold Mogensen of Ilion. He was predeceased by his wife, Amy; his sister, Louise “Toots”; and his brothers, Arthur, Harold “Rusty” and William.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours for Joe on Monday, November 27, 2017 from 4:00PM – 6:00PM at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home’s larger location at 4309 Acme Road, Town of Frankfort, Ilion, NY (315) 895-7722. Joe’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Tuesday morning, November 28, 2017 at 10:30AM at the funeral home with Deacon James Bower officiating. Procession will follow to Armory Hill Cemetery where Joe’s earthly remains will be laid to rest.
