Obituary of Ruth A. Cumm
HERKIMER – Mrs. Ruth A. (Scanlon) Hart Cumm, passed away at the age of 95 on Monday morning November 27, 2017 at Alpine Rehabilitation and Nursing Care, Little Falls, New York.
She was born in Greig, NY, daughter of the late William and Bertha (Graves) Scanlon on September 18, 1922. Her family moved from Greig to Herkimer in 1929. She was married to Robert J. Hart on September 2, 1939 at St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer. Mr. Hart passed away on February 7, 1961. She later met and married Henry C. “Hank” Cumm on December 26, 1971. Henry passed away November 3, 1997.
Mom’s greatest joy in life was to be with family. She was the best of cooks. Every Sunday and Holidays she made a roast “something” which was always delicious. This tradition continues today with her children and grandchildren. She taught us well. Mom worked as a sales clerk in Munger’s Department Store and at Carl’s Drug Store in the Cosmetics Department, retiring in 1972. Ruth belonged to the Herkimer VFW Auxiliary and served as President from 1976 until 1977. Mom was one of the oldest residents of the Galinsky Apartments in Herkimer. She took great pride in keeping her place neat and cozy.
Survivors include her children Bette Carol Lewis and husband Tom, James Hart, Judy Munn, and step-children Bob and Lorraine Cumm, her grandchildren, Tom and Shirley Lewis, Trudy and Leonard Bienkowski, Tracy and Joe Graulich, Kristen Seelow, Don and Pam Munn, Tim and Christine Munn, Robin and Ed Carroll, Amanda and Mike Stevens, and James, Jr. and Jen Hart, and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Her siblings also survive her, Eleanor Thompson, Reginald Scanlon and Nona Stewart. She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Bob Munn, daughter-in-law Ruth Hart, grandson-in-law, Don Seelow, her step-children Connie & Jim Holbrook, and her siblings, Alta Cool, Anna Scanlon, William Scanlon, Donald Scanlon, and Beverly Stagliano.
Family and friends are invited to call at The Enea Family Funeral Home (the former Holleran parlor) on Wednesday November 29, 2017 from 4 until 6 PM. The Herkimer VFW Ladies Auxiliary will gather at the funeral home at 5PM to conduct services. Anthony & Joseph, South Main Street Herkimer where her Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated by Father Quy Vo, Pastor. Interment will follow, St. Mary’s Cemetery, town of Herkimer.
