Obituary of Richard H. "Dick" Mayhew
HERKIMER/ILION – Richard “Dick” H. Mayhew, age 80, of N. Washington St., Herkimer, formerly of Ilion, passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2017, at Valley Health Services, Herkimer, with his loving daughter, Laura and her husband, Bill by his side.
He was born on May 26, 1937, in Utica, the son of Arthur and Kathrine (Coauette) Mayhew and attended Camden Central School. Dick was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the US Marine Corps. In 1960, he was married to Joan DeMott in Scranton, PA. She died on April 23, 2005. Mr. Mayhew was a self employed furniture repairman and refinisher for 45 years. At one time he was employed at Leeds Furniture Store, Utica and other local furniture stores.
Dick was past Commandant and life member of the Marine Corps League-Herkimer County Detachment, Inc., co-chairman of the Marine Corps League Toys for Tots, co-chairman of the Marine Corps League Holly Days, Pound Keeper Devil Dogs #259, Ilion, past NYS Marine Corps League Historian, member of American Legion Post 38, of Herkimer, Second Vice Commander Adjutant of Veterans Council of Herkimer County, member of the Tun Tavern Leathernecks in Boonville and past member of Amvets #777. Mr. Mayhew was also a recipient of the local Home Town Hero Award for Herkimer, Oneida, Otsego and Madison Counties.
Surviving family members include his daughter, Laura Mathisen and her husband, Bill, with whom he resided in Herkimer; Joan’s daughters, Lisa Sherman, of FL and Anita Price, of W. Edmeston; 2 grandsons, Barry and Richard Morgan; 2 granddaughters, Shannon Strobeck and Tara Resser; several other grandchildren and great-grandchildren including Dana and Tyler; his brother, Marshall Mayhew, of CA; his sisters, Ethel McDonald and Carol Frate, of FL; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Joan; his daughters, Denise and Karen; his grandson, Walter; his sister, Joyce Hoppsicker; and 2 brothers, Clifford and Gerald Mayhew.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, December 3, 2017, from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m., at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home’s original location at 102 West St., Ilion. Funeral services will be held following calling hours at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home on West St., Ilion. The Marine Corps League-Herkimer County Detachment, Inc. service will be held 1:30 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home.

The Mayhew family has entrusted Dick’s service arrangements and supervision to Funeral Director, Don Applegate.
