Obituary of Ronald "Ron" E. Smith

ILION – Ronald “Ron” E. Smith, age 75, formerly of W. Clark St., Ilion, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 18, 2018, at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare, New Hartford, with his family by his side.

He was born on December 23, 1942, in Mohawk, the son of Walter and Emma (McLean) Smith and attended Ilion schools.  Ron was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the US Army.  On November 26, 1966, he was married to Marcia Ann Miller, at the Ilion Methodist Church.  She died on May 29, 2008.  Ron was employed as a fork lift operator at Remington Arms Co., Ilion, retiring in 2006.  In his early years, he worked at the Fonda Speedway on Saturdays for the stock car races.  Ron also enjoyed working on bikes.

Surviving family members include his daughters, Patricia Bennett and her husband, Dale, of Ilion, and Bobbie Jo Swiernik and her husband, Timothy, of Turin; his son, Ronald Smith, Jr. and his fiancée, Amy, of Taberg; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins; a special friend, Loretta Hall; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Susan Reed, Bev Gloskey, Pam Miller, Jack Miller, and Donald and Linda Miller.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Marcia; his grandson, Jeff Singer, Jr.; his sister, Elizabeth Kennedy; and his brother, Walter Smith.

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 26, 2018, from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m., at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home’s larger facility, located at 4309 Acme Rd. (old Main St. between Ilion and Frankfort, NY).

Ron’s Celebration of Life service will be held at the conclusion of visitation, on Monday, March 26, 2018, at 1:00 p.m., at the funeral home on Acme Rd.  Spring burial will be in Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion.
