Obituary of Joan A Smith

LITTLE FALLS – Mrs. Joan A. “Joanne” Smith, age 77, a lifelong Little Falls resident, passed away very unexpectedly on Thursday, September 27, 2018.

Born on September 16, 1941, Joan was the daughter of the late William and Sophia (Miosek) Sweet. She was raised and educated in Little Falls schools. On April 23, 1960, she was wed to Edward H. Smith at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Little Falls by Father Brice. Together, Ed and Joan shared in a blessed and devoted union of over fifty-eight years.

Joan was well-known throughout her Little Falls community and she was admired by all who were blessed enough to cross paths with her. She loved her job as a Monitor at Benton Hall Academy and formed close-knit bonds with both students and co-workers alike. At home, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who kept an immaculate home and was an amazing chef. Besides keeping up her own home, she also cleaned homes for others, and easily made friends with those who she worked for. She was a gentle woman who enjoyed taking long walks through Little Falls and in her spare time she volunteered with H.A.L.O, whose mission to help animals live was close to Joan’s heart. Together with her husband, Ed, she was a longtime parishioner of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Little Falls.

Survivors include her husband, Ed; her daughters and sons-in-law, Sherrie and Thomas Sisson of Dennis, MA, and Dawn and Joe Jouben of Little Falls; her sons and daughter-in-law, Brian Smith of Cape Cod, MA and Mark and Shelly Smith of Paines Hollow; her grandchildren, Tara and her husband, Kevin, Kyle, Joey and his wife, Kayleigh, Jenna, Shauna and her husband, Nate, and Taylor and her companion, Brad; and her great-grandchildren, Bradley, Connor, Caroline, Tucker, Brody and one soon-to-be great-grandson, Joey. She also leaves her brother and sister-in-law, David and Ann Sweet of Fayetteville, NY; her sisters and brother-in-law, Rosalie Mason of Mississippi, Diane Kalet of Auburn, NY and Virginia and Wilburt Vanschaick of Nelliston, NY; along with numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.

She was predeceased by her brother, William Sweet and by her infant grandson, Shawn.

In keeping with Joan’s wishes there will be no formal services. Private burial will take place at Rural Park Cemetery in Ingham Mills, at the convenience of the family.

The Smith family has entrusted all arrangements to Harry and Kevin Enea and Martin L. Ciaccia, funeral directors of the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 West Monroe Street, Little Falls, NY (315) 823-2424. Online notes of sympathy may be left at www.eneafamily.com.
