Obituary of Harold A. Egleston
ILION – Mr. Harold A. Egleston, age 94, a lifelong Ilion resident, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, September 28, 2018 at The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at Mohawk Valley.
Born on April 14, 1924, Harold was the son of the late George and Beulah (Davis) Egleston. He was raised in Ilion and attended local schools. In 1943, Harold enlisted with the United States Army and proudly served his country throughout the duration of World War II.
On July 4, 1945, Harold was married to the former Mary E. Sheehan at the Annunciation Church in Ilion, and together they shared in a blessed union of almost sixty-two years, until Mary’s passing on March 6, 2007.
Harold was a hardworking man who spent thirty-five years as a Stock Sander with the Remington Arms Co. in Ilion, retiring in 1985.
Harold was a generous and giving man who always looked out for others, took care of his neighbors, and was devoted to his roles as husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed being outdoors, mowing lawns and taking rides through the countryside.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and George Dowd of Ilion; two granddaughters, Shevaun and Richard Abbott and Meaghan and Beau Binney, all of Ilion; and his five great-grandchildren, Shay Binney, Nathan Abbott, Alexandra Abbott, Ricky Abbott, Samantha Abbott and one more on the way! He also leaves his nieces and nephews, Kathleen Gzanowicz of Herkimer, Daniel Conroy of Denver, Sean Conroy and his companion, Florence Johnson of Ilion, and Kelly Conroy-Myrtle and her husband, Rodney of Colorado; his step-grandchildren, Kimberly and Tim Tyson of GA and Eric Chafin of TX and their families; numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins; and a lifelong friend, Mary Hoffmeister.
Besides his parents and wife, Harold was predeceased by his brothers, Bernard W. Egleston and Raymond J. Egleston; his brother-in-law, John J. Sheehan, Jr.; and his sister-in-law, Katherine Conroy.
A special thank you is extended to Harold’s neighbors for always looking out for his well-being and to the staff of the 2nd Floor at the Grand at Mohawk Valley for making his last months as comfortable as possible.
