Obituary of Leo Timothy Carrig

LITTLE FALLS, NY - Leo Timothy Carrig, 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 27, 2018, at the Alpine Nursing and Rehabilitation Home following a short illness. His family is appreciative of the attentive care he received while residing there.

Leo was born in Little Falls, NY, on January 21, 1927, to the late Timothy and Marie (Grau) Carrig.  He was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy and the President of the Class of 1945.  Upon completion of high school, Leo served in the United States Army at Fort Benning, Georgia.  He was honorably discharged after 18 months of service.  Upon returning home, Leo attended Utica College of Syracuse University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting.  He spent his career at General Electric, Utica, NY, before retiring in 1987.

A life-long resident of Little Falls, Leo was an active member of the Holy Family Parish where he served as lector, usher and trustee.  He attended daily mass for many years and belonged to the Nocturnal Adoration Society.  Leo was dedicated to the Knights of Columbus serving as Grand Knight of Council 220 for many years.  He was also a member of the American Legion.

An avid baseball fan, he enjoyed listening to NY Yankees games on the radio and went to Cooperstown each year for the Hall of Fame game—an activity he greatly enjoyed with his nephews.  He also followed and cheered on Syracuse University football and basketball.  His greatest joy, however, was spending time with his loved ones at family birthdays, holidays and other gatherings.

He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Frank J. Matus Jr., of Little Falls.  Leo is also survived by his nephews; a niece and their spouses, including Joseph and Kathleen Matus, (Huntsville, AL), Robert and Ann Matus, (Syracuse, NY), James and Barbara Matus, (Poughkeepsie, NY), Richard and Janine Matus, (Gilbert, AZ), Frank and Paula Matus, (Baldwinsville, NY), Timothy and Jane Carrig, (Erie, Colorado), Kathryn Dingman her husband, John, (New Hartford, NY), James and Suzanne Carrig, (San Jose, CA); and several great-nephews, nieces and cousins.  Leo was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Dr. James J. Carrig, who passed away on October 5, 2018 and James’ wife, Mary, who died in 2016.

Funeral services will begin on Friday, November 2, 2018 with a 10:30 AM prayer service at The Enea Family Funeral Home, Little Falls, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial that will be celebrated at 11:00 AM at the Holy Family Parish, corner of E Main & John Streets, Little Falls, with Rev. Terence Healey as celebrant. Interment with military honors will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend calling hours at The Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 West Monroe Street in Little Falls on Thursday, November 1st from 4 to 7 PM. The Knights of Columbus will hold a prayer service in honor of Leo at 6:30 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home.

It is the wish of the family that contributions in memory of Leo Carrig be considered to the Holy Family Parish or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Envelopes are available at the funeral home for this purpose.
