Obituary of Viola Ruth Johnson

ST. JOHNSVILLE – Mrs. Viola Ruth Johnson, 96, of West Liberty Street, passed away on Tuesday morning November 6, 2018 at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, NY, with her loving family by her side.

She was born on December 31, 1921, in Hallsville, NY, a daughter of the late Isaac and Ida May (Moore) Sanders. She was educated in Fort Plain and Hallsville schools. Her marriage to Arnold B. Johnson on January 20, 1940 was full of love and devotion and their large loving family is a testament to that. The couple shared a blessed union of nearly 49 years and Arnold passed away on November 11, 1988. She was a machine operator with Allegro Shoe Corporation, in Little Falls and in her leisure time enjoyed puzzles, such as jigsaw and crossword. Viola was famous for her baking ability and specifically she created amazing apple pies! First and foremost was Viola’s ability to keep her family together and strong, through good times and bad. Mom was always there for us and we will always remember her.

She is survived by her beloved family, her children, Irma Service, of St. Johnsville, Shirley Bowerman, of Ephratah, Leona Johnson, of St. Johnsville, Richard Johnson, of Fort Plain and Rose Crosier and husband, Timothy, of St. Johnsville; her brother, Lee Sanders and his wife, Kathy, of Nelliston; many grandchildren; great – grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her children, Norma Corso, Russell Johnson, Arnold Butch Johnson and Clifford Johnson; her sons-in-law, Rodney ”Rick” Service, Robert Corso and Patrick Austin; and her sisters and brothers, Raymond, Leland, Everett, Arlene, Cecil, Frances and Isaac.

Funeral services will be held on Friday November 9, 2018 at 1:00 PM at The Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center Street in St. Johnsville with Viola’s great-nephew Rev. David A. Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Curtis Corners Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are prior to the funeral service from 10 AM until 1PM on Friday.

A very special thank you is extended to St. Johnsville Ambulance and staff for all of the tender loving care they have provided. The family is grateful as well to Little Falls and Cooperstown Hospitals and their Intensive Care Units as well as to Dr. Haas for his professionalism.

Those wishing to remember Viola in a special way are asked to consider a donation in her memory to either the St. Johnsville Volunteer Ambulance Corp, PO Box 296, St. Johnsville, NY 13452 or to the St. Johnsville Fire Department, at 6 West Main Street, St. Johnsville, NY 13452. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
