Obituary of Herbert J Averell

DANUBE: Herbert "Herbie" John Averell Jr., 83, Town of Danube, formerly of Long Island, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2011 at Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown, with the love and support of his family. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he graduated from Mepham High School and Alfred State College. Herbie began custom farming and was drafted into the Army during the Korean War and received a medical discharge. He was united in marriage to Carol Lee Hahn and began married life farming with his brother in West Winfield. Herbie then relocated his family to Long Island where he retired from Northrup Grumman Aerospace Corporation in facilities engineering as a draftsman. His example of kindness, playfulness, calmness, generosity and industriousness remains an inspiration to all whom knew him. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Carol Lee Averell; his daughters and their husbands, Joanne and Bill Mausling, Susan and Charlie Westfield, Linda and Jim Wancho; grandsons, Nicholas Wancho, Billy Mausling, Jon Mausling and wife Lori and great grandson, Jon, Jr. Herbie is also survived by a brother, David C. Averell and wife Margaret, who reside in Danube, along with several cousins and many treasured nieces and nephews. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, November 26, 2011 from 2-5 p.m. at Portobello Inn Bed and Breakfast, 5989 Rte 5, Herkimer, NY. Arrangements are entrusted to the Enea Family Funeral Home (Harry, Kevin and Daniel Enea-Directors), Little Falls. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Friends of Bassett or the American Lung Association. Envelopes will be available at the service.
