Obituary of Alan Shedd

Alan J. Shedd, 76, a lifelong Mohawk resident, passed away on Thursday December 6, 2007 at his home with his loving family by his side. He was born March 29, 1931 in Ilion, the son of the late Glenn & Bertha (McCarthy) Shedd and was a graduate of Mohawk High School, class of 1949. His marriage to Elizabeth Hoffman took place on June 30, 1956 at St. Francis de Sales Church in Herkimer. Mr. Shedd was a United States Navy veteran, during the Korean Conflict. He enlisted on January 15, 1951 serving on the USS Hamilton ? a DMS Minesweeper. He was honorably discharged on December 1, 1954 with the rank of Electrician Mate 3rd class. For 35 years, Alan worked for the New York Telephone. He along with his wife Elizabeth owned an operated Shedd?s Antiques in Mohawk. Alan was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Francis de Sales Church in Herkimer. He also was a member of the Mohawk American Legion for 53 years, Mohawk Fire Department Volunteer and Exempt Volunteer Fire Department (Fox Den). Survivors include his wife Elizabeth, four sons, David Shedd of Altmar, NY, Kevin Shedd and wife Christine of Cape Coral, Florida, Michael Shedd and wife Jennifer of Ilion, and Matthew Shedd and wife Stacie of Ilion, a daughter, Diane Girard and husband Peter of Jordanville, 15 grandchildren, Corey Shedd, Ryan Shedd, Rebecca (Josh) Smith, Amanda Shedd, Justine & Jennifer Shedd, William, Emily, Abigail Shedd, Allison Nicholas, Logan Shedd, and Sarah, Joseph & Benjamin Girard. A great grandchild, Landen Smith, two sisters, Rose Mary Kane of Ilion, and Anne Watson of Utica, a daughter-in-law, Cindy Depew of Fairfield, and several nieces & nephews including a special niece, Kathy Kenealy. He was pre-deceased by a brother, Leon Shedd and a sister, Estella DeCoursey. Relatives and friends are invited to memorial visitation at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, (Main St., between Ilion & Frankfort) (894-8000) on Sunday December 9, 2007 from 3-7 pm. Alan?s funeral will commence on Monday December 10, 2007 at 11:00 am at St. Francis de Sales Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Reverend Mark Cunningham, pastor. Burial will follow at Mohawk Cemetery (Vickerman Hill). Members of the Mohawk American Legion are asked to meet at the funeral home on Sunday evening at 6:00 pm for services. Members of the Mohawk Fire Department are asked to meet at the funeral home Sunday evening at 6:30 pm for services. As requested by the family please omit flower offerings and make all memorial contributions to Sarcoma Research. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
