Obituary of Francis Entwistle

Francis E. Entwistle, age 81, formerly of Columbia Street, Mohawk, passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at the Folts Homes, Herkimer. Fran was born Oct. 10, 1924, in Herkimer, son of the late Ernest B and Garnetta (McGraw) Entwistle. He attended Herkimer schools. On Sept. 11, 1948, he was united in marriage to Ann M. Karpowich at Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer. They shared a blessed union of 48 years until Mrs. Entwistle's passing on July 22, 1997. Fran was a proud veteran of WWII serving with the U.S. Army in the European Theater of War. He was the recipient of several decorations and citations including two Purple Heart medals. He was employed as general manager at Cut Rate Supermarket in Herkimer with over 30 years of service, and then as night manager for Great American Food Store in Ilion until his retirement several years ago. He was a longtime member of the Mohawk American Legion Crowley Barnum Post 25, the Anzio Beachhead Veterans Association. Fran's life revolved around his beloved family. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. Among his fondest memories were those of times spent with his family on Cape Cod. Always proud of his granddaughters Ashley and Chelsea, they were a very important part of his being. He was an avid Yankee's and Giants fan, loved listening to Frank Sinatra and the Big Bands, enjoyed coin collecting, and American history including WWII. Fran had a quick wit and great sense of humor. His memory will always be treasured by those that knew and loved him. Survivors include his two daughters and one son-in-law, Marsha and Harold Hutton of Herkimer; Jacklyn Entwistle of Newport; one son, Thomas Entwistle of Utica; his beloved grandchildren, Ashley Kelly and her husband Ryan of Ilion; Chelsea Hutton of Herkimer; one cherished great-grandson, Troy Brian Kelly; two sisters, Shirley Edick and her husband Robert ?Bob? of Herkimer; Sandy Marusic of Herkimer; three brothers, Robert Entwistle and his wife Joyce of Mohawk, Donald Entwistle and his wife Angie of Mohawk, Raymond Entwistle and his wife Marie of Herkimer. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was predeceased by his sisters, Betty Holynski and Dorothy France and his brothers, Joseph and Ernest Entwistle. Fran's funeral service will be held Friday, June 16, 2006 commencing at noon at the Graves-Applegate-Day Funeral Home, 48 E. Main St., Mohawk, with Pastor Harry Teuchert officiating. Interment will follow to Mohawk Cemetery where Fran will be laid to rest with full military honors accorded. Family and friends are invited to visitation Friday from 10 a.m. to noon prior to his funeral service at Graves-Applegate-Day Funeral Home, Mohawk. Fran's family wishes to thank the fifth floor staff at the Folts Homes for the most wonderful care and compassion given him there.
