Christmas this year won't be the same without Mary - she made it special, she made it real. She embodied the holiday spirit of peace on Earth, goodwill toward men. Steve, Punker & Jacqueline, Gary & Sue, Amy & Will, and Family, A week has passed without Mary here with us and I'm sure it's barely real at this point. My sympathies to Mary's family. I was so surprised to read this news online this morning. Sending positive thoughts to everyone. Mrs. (Grabinski) as we knew her back in the day, was always a "hoot". So full of life and fun. Devoted to her students and any electives she was part of. She'll be missed by many.

I had the priviledge of knowing Ms. Darman for many years, first of all she was one of my favorite teachers at LF school, (class of 1989), and throughout the years she has been a mentor, a friend and a tutor for me. I will always recall the day that Mary was tutoring me for a class, we always had tutoring sessions in her home and we always had a great time. I will always remember that one particular day when I was pregnant for my first child, Mary was tutoring me that evening and my water broke at her house, on her leather couch!!! Mary was in a slight panic-I clearly remember her facial expressions, I remember her saying "call your mother, call your mother, you cant deliver in the house, I dont know how to deliver a baby." (the good thing was the hospital was only two blocks away). We have always been able to laugh about that moment for the past 21 years. When Mary would see me in the hallways at HCCC, she would always ask how my oldest child was that was almost delivered on her leather couch!! I'm sure everyone has great stories that we all could share as Mary was a wonderful person to know, to listen to, to learn from. She enriched the lives of so many people. I will always remember her smiling face. She will be missed. Her memories of many things will last forever in all of us. Her love of christmas and having every room in decoration and a tree in EVERY room was a joy that you had to see.

Mary was truly the Gold Standard as to how to live life to its fullest. She was so full of zest that you couldn't help but smile when you were in her presence. I was saddened to learn of Mary's passing while reading the Telegram on-line today. She was one of my favorite teachers at St. Johsville High School (Class of 66). I enjoyed renewing our acquaintence when she started teaching at HCCC. We had some lively discussions and I always enjoyed her attendance at my class reunions. Mary you will be greatly missed as a mom teacher and friend.

Steve, I didn't put it together...I�ve loved Mary since the day I met her at LFHS & I never see a Time Life Magazine without thinking of her. We became friends and co-workers at HCCC where she taught me to look at life with a bright spirit and always a glimmer of hope. She was one of the reasons I enjoyed going to work each day. Please rest assured, the angels are smiling brighter these days because of one woman who joined them in Heaven with diamonds in her eyes, a song in her voice and a heart made of gold. To Steve and Mary's Family, When I think of my good friend Mary, I see her at the front of the class teaching. That was her gift...to teach. I know this because I saw the student's reactions to Mary. They loved the woman...truly. She'd always be in the hall @ HCCC chatting with a student or colleague. It could be about politics or some personal matter. She was there not only to impart knowledge, but gave of herself freely. It was second nature to Mary and I experienced it myself and I am so thankful. She will be missed terribly, but Mary's light will live on in those who knew and loved her.

Mary, Gary, and Will, I remember coming to your home as a young teen hanging out with Punker. I always thought your mom was the coolest person. A few years later I had her as a social studies teacher - she had a real knack for getting each of her students to take an interest in social concerns. As a teacher and an activist, your mom enriched the lives of many people. Most memorable is the fact that she provided uncompromised love and support to her family. There is no way I could possibly explain the impact that your mother's life has had on so many. I have heard countless stories over the last two days. She was just so much...so much the educator...so much the friend...so much the mom. I remember her assigning a book my senior year in a philosophy class, "Love" by Leo Buscaglia. "I've always thought that people need to feel good about themselves and I see my role as offering support to them, to provide some light along the way." I so think that she epitomized that - to everyone she encountered.

To Mary's Family, I admired Mary. She was a woman who was ahead of her time and who taught us that being a student meant more than learning facts, it meant digging a bit deeper. I will never forget the "textbook" we used in her class, it was a subscription to TIME Magazine. She thought we should know what was going on in the world and then talk about it. Imagine that!!! She had a beautiful spirit and a wonderful joy for life. I was so touched to read of her choice for the scholarship recipients. That alone, tells us so much about her legacy. May it live on... Our family was saddened to hear about the passing of Snooky. We send our love and condolences to her family and friends. I personally had the privilege of knowing her first as a teacher at LFHS, then as a friend, and finally as a mentor. Knowing "Snook the Book" changed my life at a young age. She loved to argue passionately but also passionately listened. She took care of people individually but worried about everyone collectively. No one was left behind in Snooky's world. Thirty-five years later, I can remember her saying, "if you develop one attribute in life, let it be empathy". Always put yourself in the other person's shoes, have respect, take care of others. That was her life and that's what she shared with others. She made me love politics and public service even more. Like Snooky, I went to LeMoyne College - on her recommendation. We stayed in touch, making sure in every one of my jobs that i practiced the art of empathy. She was always sharing her "big ideas" and telling people about the latest book she was reading. Snooky had a huge influence, as a teacher and a friend, on the lives of so many people. She will be missed but her ideas and lessons will go on and on. Dear Mary and Gary, I'm sorry to see your moms passing. I hope you find peace in this difficult time. Your mom was the best teacher I think any of us had. She certainly tolerated a lot of nonsense from some of us. I can remember on more than one occassion putting my own grades in her records books, only to see in my report card that she knew of my mischievious ways and graded my scores as they should have been.I also recall your mom treating all of her students like they were her own children. Your mom left me with good memories of little falls high, not that I made any of those good memories for myself. Never let the memories of your mom fade, it will always keep her at your side.Once again I hope you two and the rest of your family find peace in your time of sorrow.
