Obituary of Mary Darman

Little Falls: Mary (Girmonde) Darman passed away at home on Friday, April 23, 2010, with her family by her side. She was born on September 21, 1939 in Utica, New York, the daughter of the late Rosario and Mary (Rich) Girmonde. She was a graduate of Little Falls High School and Attended LeMoyne College, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in History. She went on to receive her Master’s Degree from Colgate University. Mary taught high school Social Studies for thirty years, twenty-five of which were at Little Falls High School. After retiring in 1992, she began teaching as an adjunct Sociology Professor at Herkimer County Community College. She continued teaching up to the onset of her illness in June of 2009. Teaching was her passion. She believed that you never stop learning. She continued learning through teaching and reading for all of her seventy years. She was a loyal fan of all sports. She spent many memorable times watching golf, basketball, and football with her family. Her love for her family was always the most important aspect of her life. She was famous for her wonderful cooking and large family dinners. She loved the holidays, especially Christmas. Everyone knew her home was always the “holiday house” with her many trees and decorations. She was a very proud and dedicated Democrat. She loved the energy of debate on any subject, especially politics. It meant so much to her to see Barack Obama elected president. She never thought she would see that kind of history made in her lifetime. She was much more than a citizen of Little Falls; she was an ambassador. She told anyone who would listen what a wonderful place it is to live in and raise a family. She was predeceased by her parents, Rosario and Mary (Rich) Girmonde and two brothers, William and Rosario, Jr. She left behind a family that could not have loved her more, including her beloved husband of nineteen years, Stephen Darman and her children, daughter Mary Grabinski and granddaughter Jacqueline; two sons, Gary R. Grabinski and his wife Susan and grandchildren Gary, Carli, Kaytee, and Cody; and William Grabinski and his wife Amy and grandchildren Jenna, Alyse, Wade, and Jason; her sister-in-law Jacky Grabinski; and former husband and father of her three children, S. Gary Grabinski; three step-children Isis Ivory and husband Brian, as well as her three step-grandchildren Zoe, Flynn, and Harper Ivory; Jeremy Darman, and the late Joshua Darman; three nieces Rosemarie Girmonde Jordan, Belinda Girmonde, and Brook Girmonde. She also leaves behind many close friends, including her dear friend Beverly Vespasiano, and her college roommate Donna Stegich Kauffman. In respect for her wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial calling hours are Sunday, April 25, 2010 from 2:00 – 6:00 pm at Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe Street, Little Falls. Her good friend and dancing partner, Deacon Joe De Lorenzo will officiate an intimate ceremony at the funeral home following calling hours. In lieu of flowers, Mary has requested that contributions be made to the “Mary Girmonde Darman Scholarship Fund.” It will be awarded annually to the student who has shown the most compassion towards their fellow classmates. Private inurnment will take place later next week at the convenience of the family in the family plot at St. Mary’s Cemetery, town of Herkimer. The family would like to thank Doctors Perlansky, Max, and DeTraglia, and the staff of Hospice for the excellent care and kindness shown during Mary’s illness.
